On the Family Tree pages in my baby book, filled out in 1942, I have the following information. GGG Grandfather Samuel Jones (Welsh), July 14, 1768 Maine GGG Grandmother Esther Church (English), 1772 Mansfield, Conn Their parents' names are not given. I never thought to ask my mother or other family members if it was really "Maine" or if their source could have been written as an abbreviation that could have been taken to mean either state's name, Maine or Massachusetts. To further complicate the matter, Maine wasn't even a state at the time of Samuel's birth. That area was part of Massachusetts. In a family genealogy typed by my uncle, who has the family bible, Samuel's birth & death dates are July 14, 1764 - August 1, 1833. The birth year differs from the one given in my baby book. Could someone have mis-copied? Could one be the birth year and the other the baptism year? Esther's birth date is given as April 10, 1772 and no death date is given. Their marriage date is given as Dec. 19, 1792. My uncle's family has Samuel's will deeding 250 acres of land in Pennsylvania to John Church Jones in exchange for John caring for Samuel and Esther "in their declining years." At the New England Historic Genealogical Soc. library I found Samuel & Esther's marriage date confirmed and her town of residence, Brookfield, Mass., and Samuel, Jr.'s residence, Shutesbury. This info was in a book referred to by someone in a previous post. I have read the town records of Shutesbury, Mass. up to about 1805, by which time Samuel & Esther were in Orange Co. Vermont, and found references to Samuel, Jr. There were also references to Samuel Jones owning pews in the local church. A list of Samuel & Esther's children in the family Bible includes Hayward Jones, b. July 26, 1810. This causes me to wonder if Mercy Hayward could be an ancestor of these Joneses. Hope this is helpful to someone. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
