Please reply if you can confirm or correct the following. William Panton married Catherine McNaughtan, a widow, (abt 1786 - 1879?) at Montreal in 1820. William was listed as a gardener at Cote des Neiges on the marriage entry. Catherine emigrated with her family in 1802 from Fortingall, Glen Lyon, Scotland. Her first marriage was to William Ferguson of Charlottenburgh, Ont. Her date of death is based on a church entry in the Cote des Neiges Presbyterian church records - because she lived at Quincy, Mass this may have to be confirmed. There are 4 children found in the church records, and possibly one more as noted below: Child 1: William born 1821, Montreal. He married sometime before 1850 and probably in Mass to a Charlotte M. (surname not known). Three children are identified via census. 1.a. Charlotte E. Panton, born abt 1854 in Mass who married first a Mr. Rice (children below) and second, a Mr Southwick and living in Brooklyn, NY, in 1900 They had three children, two of whom are found in census. They are 1.a.a. Catherine L. Rice born about 1881, possibly Maine who married about 1904 to Robert E. Linnell born abt 1883 Mass. Their children in 1920 were 1.a.a.a. Robert Linnell born about 1916 1.a.a.b. Harrison R. Linnell born about 1920 1.a.b. Susan P. Rice born abt 1884 Mass who married William H. Rice born about 1888, Mass. No children found to date 1.a.c. William H. Rice born 1857 Mass 1.b. William A. Panton born about 1859, Mass. He was a machinist in a shipyard. Later census shows him as single. 1.c. John A. Panton born about 1861 Mass. He married at Detroit, Michigan, in 1914 to Bessie L., (her 2nd marriage) born about 1881 New Hampshire. Hollis Hamel, a stepson, born 1905, Mass, is listed in the census. Her maiden name is not on the marriage entry but her parents were Horace and Mary. John Panton was a toolmaker in the automotive industry. 1.d. Joseph born about 1863 Mass. No further information. Child 2. John Ogilvie Panton born 1822. No further information has turned up. This child was baptized 10 days after birth, so he may not have been well. No burial entry has been found Child 3. Lawrence born 1825 Montreal and died 29 Apr 1909 at Jewett, Conn. He married a Jane C. Brown born 1836 Conn. And she died after 1909. He emigrated in 1836 to Quincy, Mass (probably), spent 20 years in Colorado, 10 years in California, and moved 1893 to Jewett. He married late and had no children. Child 4. Elizabeth born 1827 in Montreal. No other information but MAY be the Margaret listed below. Child 5. Margaret born about 1831 Canada and died after 1909. According to Lawrence's obituary, she lived in Nebraska with her son John E Cook and his wife Eva. Census records have her husband as George Cook of Nova Scotia and a daughter Isabel who must have died young. The forename is from census records and she may be the Elizabeth Child 4 whose forename is from the church entry. Note especially for Rhoda: a)the Southwick, Rice, Linney information is based strictly on census information that looks like a good fit. It may prove to be inaccurate. B) Catherine's death at Cote des Neiges in 1879 looks right for age and information, and the witnesses were both MacFarlane. And since I'm having a hard time finding Peter and Margaret, perhaps they, too, were in Cote des Neiges. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
