I think it is the 1910 census which showed him living in Milton, MA, as a live-in gardner in a mansion there. He moved to a nephew's home a few years later because he had cancer and died there in 1916. >From memory, I have not been able to find him in the 1880 or 1900 census reports. (I'll check my notes.) Charles was born in Lubec, ME, in 1850, the youngest of 10 children of Daniel and Lucy (McDANIEL) RICE. Around 1870, he came down to Boston and might have found work on the HUTCHINSON Farm in Winchester. That's possibly how he met Adelaide Crosby HUTCHINSON. They married in 1875 and had 2 daughters, one 1876 and one 1878. The 1880 census found Adelaide in the "Danvers State Hospital" and her 2 very young daughters were living with here parents on the Farm. Charles was not around. No one knows where Charles lived from 1880 to 1910. However, I found out he might have come down to Boston with his married sister, Mrs. Amelia (RICE) McNEAR, who settled in Medford. He might have gone to stay with that family for a while, and he remained close to that family (buried with them in 1916). His first daughter was Louise W. RICE and she married G. Sanford KIDDER, b1870 near Calais, ME. They married there but came down to Winchester to live. They were my great-grandparents. His 2nd daughter was Edith Crosby RICE who never married. She was a Children's Librarian in Arlington for over 25 years, only retiring because of bad health. Mrs. Adelaide RICE never remarried. I have no reason to believe that Charles ever remarried, but I suppose it is possible. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. My family has pictures of Adelaide's family (HUTCHINSON Farm in Winchester and CROSBY Farm in Arlington). But, no one has a picture of Charles RICE. I've always been curious what he looked like. (I've mentioned this story before on several MA Lists. You can find more details in the archives of the Lists.) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
