It definitely isn't online. I do think there is a caretaker or keeper of the records, though. I've an idea I talked to him. If you call around Cohasset, try the town cemeteries, teh historical society, the library, the churches, you should eventually get to him. I seem to recall that there are three or four cemeteries in and adjacent to Cohasset. I'm not right up on it, but I called the libary and the historical society, and some Catholic churches (at one time, they had their own cemeteries, and at one time I think they were doing something like burying people at the next town.) I think that there is Central Cemetery, two more recent town cemeteries and the Catholic cemetery or cemeteries, but like I said, I'm not right up on it. The Norfolk County Probate Court seriously outgrew its space in Dedham where the court houses are very old and antiquated and were in need of a lot of renovation. I'm a social worker and I spent much time at the Dedham Probate Court on child welfare cases waiting and waiting and waiting. "Private" atty/client/social worker conferences were held in the very crowded, loud hallway, a basement area, and were not one bit private. Family Services had the tiniest office space, not good if you had several people that needed to be present in a meeting. There were no conference rooms. One old small office was converted into a court room which was overcrowded with 3 people never mind the numbers that would have to squeeze into it. A/C was non existent. I once tripped and broke my eyeglasses getting off the elevator because the floors were so worn. The new one is modern, spacious, well lit, and lots of free parking. It is not as easy to get to, you kind of have to know the area, but it can be seen from I95. Not sure why it was situated in Canton, but it is not far from Dedham. Probably the space was available and at a good price. Eileen Velez, Hyde Park, MA

It might be raised to a quarter now. Someone at the Probate Court should be able to tell you the cost. The people were not very helpful unless you knew exactly what you were looking for. There is a computerized searchable index to assist you in your finds. Once you have the file numbers, then you complete your request(s) and wait for the next available person. They retrieve the records and you can make copies on the coin-operated copier in the office. If you are not located in Norfolk County, I would recommend contacting the "Random Acts Of Genealogical Kindness (http://www.raogk.org/massachu.htm)" to see if someone can assist you. The probate court used to be in Dedham in the courthouses there but more recently got moved over to Canton. I think it really was a space/finance issue as to why it got moved. As for the # of pages of the probate file - I think it is a matter of bureaucratic policy and not that anyone if trying to be difficult with you. The probate court has access to the index just as we have access to the index of the records. To find out the number of pages in the file they would actually have to pull the file and count them up. They probably have a policy that they need to have a request (ie commitment) in hand before pulling the file. Otherwise they could end up in a situation of wasting a lot of time on jobs that aren't being paid for. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Just curious if you have asked the Littleton, MA, Library for information. They have a list of people buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery (all cemeteries??). Or, have you asked the Town Clerk in Littleton for the information from the "death records." Perhaps there is an error in the records. My first thought was that the man went by 2 names: Ferdinand Bruce WYMAN and "Bruce" WYMAN. But, from my research, I know that people with the same name in the same town were given nicknames. For instance, up in Maine, my ancestor was Joseph "Calvin" KIDDER, and his 4th son was James "Calvin" KIDDER, but everyone in the small town called the son, "Cal, Jr." And, back in NH, Calvin had an uncle, Joseph KIDDER, who had a cousin with the same name living in the same town. So, one was Joe, and one was Joe, Jr. (he actually was a Jr.). Having said that, one other possibility is that Bruce WYMAN was buried twice (moved?). Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. While looking for information on a Robert HUTCHINSON, born Cambridge, I found out he was killed in a car accident ~4 yrs. ago, and his death record said he was buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery. I went to that cemetery in Littleton, only to be told there was another Woodlawn Cemetery in the next town, Ayer. "Bob" had lived in Ayer so that is where I found his gravestone. And I'm pretty sure there is another Woodlawn Cemetery in Westford, and perhaps in Chelmsford. (All within 20-minute drive of each other.)
