    1. [Norfolk Co MA] Charles W. RICE, b1850 ME to MA and marr. 1875 (where 1880?)
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: bbffrrpp Surnames: Rice, Hutchinson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.counties.norfolk/3190/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, I'd just like to mention briefly that I would love to find out where my great-great-grandfather, Charles Wellington RICE, moved to after he left his relatively young wife in ~1879. I think it is the 1910 census which showed him living in Milton, MA, as a live-in gardner in a mansion there. He moved to a nephew's home a few years later because he had cancer and died there in 1916. >From memory, I have not been able to find him in the 1880 or 1900 census reports. (I'll check my notes.) Charles was born in Lubec, ME, in 1850, the youngest of 10 children of Daniel and Lucy (McDANIEL) RICE. Around 1870, he came down to Boston and might have found work on the HUTCHINSON Farm in Winchester. That's possibly how he met Adelaide Crosby HUTCHINSON. They married in 1875 and had 2 daughters, one 1876 and one 1878. The 1880 census found Adelaide in the "Danvers State Hospital" and her 2 very young daughters were living with here parents on the Farm. Charles was not around. No one knows where Charles lived from 1880 to 1910. However, I found out he might have come down to Boston with his married sister, Mrs. Amelia (RICE) McNEAR, who settled in Medford. He might have gone to stay with that family for a while, and he remained close to that family (buried with them in 1916). His first daughter was Louise W. RICE and she married G. Sanford KIDDER, b1870 near Calais, ME. They married there but came down to Winchester to live. They were my great-grandparents. His 2nd daughter was Edith Crosby RICE who never married. She was a Children's Librarian in Arlington for over 25 years, only retiring because of bad health. Mrs. Adelaide RICE never remarried. I have no reason to believe that Charles ever remarried, but I suppose it is possible. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. My family has pictures of Adelaide's family (HUTCHINSON Farm in Winchester and CROSBY Farm in Arlington). But, no one has a picture of Charles RICE. I've always been curious what he looked like. John was born Mar 15, 1853 to Dennis and Ellen (Kelley) Kelley in Stoughton, Mass. He had one younger brother, William. John and William are both listed on their father's administration paperwork in 1874. William mentions John as being in good health on his life insurance paperwork in 1892. William died 1911. There is no mention of John in his obituary. Kelley is written both ways in different paperwork...administration paperwork it was signed by William as Kelly...his life insurance paperwork he signed it as Kelley. I combed the vitals and there are no matching death records for Norfolk Co. or neighboring town of Brockton, Plymouth co. Any help would be appreciated! The burial info that you have for Samuel sounds likely and is more than I have. John Church Jones & family must have remained in that area as long as Esther was alive. But they did proceed on to LeRoy , MN where they lived for a few years before moving to the Livingston Co., MO area. I must ask my cousin, who has possession of, I think, John Church Jones's family Bible. If he has any documents, including the deed, or other info that looks significant I will let you know. Here are the names of Samuel and Esther's children as given in that Bible, which I think is John Church Jones's Bible. I have seen and handled but not closely examined the Bible but it does not seem frail enough to have been Samuel and Esther's. Eleanor C. Jones 8/23/1793 - 12/99; Cyntha Jones 2/Feb/1796 - 9/30/1797; Alphonus Jones 10/22/1798 m. Harriet Daven June 1814; Sophronia Jones 7/12/1800 - 1883 m. Sewell Fuller (Jr?) 11/16/1819; Lyman Jones 8/30/1802 m. Laura Prior 4/19/1825; John Church Jones 10/16/1805 - 11/4/1886 m. 3/20/1828 Isabel McArthur 2/Aug/1810 - 1896 or 1897; Roxania S. Jones 2/Apr/1808 m. William Aldrich; Hayward Jones 7/26/1810. I'll see if I can get together with my cousin who has the Bible. I wonder if Esther is buried there or nearby since she lived with son John for awhile. Did your family bible show other children beside John and Hayward? On the Family Tree pages in my baby book, filled out in 1942, I have the following information. GGG Grandfather Samuel Jones (Welsh), July 14, 1768 Maine GGG Grandmother Esther Church (English), 1772 Mansfield, Conn Their parents' names are not given. I never thought to ask my mother or other family members if it was really "Maine" or if their source could have been written as an abbreviation that could have been taken to mean either state's name, Maine or Massachusetts. To further complicate the matter, Maine wasn't even a state at the time of Samuel's birth. That area was part of Massachusetts. In a family genealogy typed by my uncle, who has the family bible, Samuel's birth & death dates are July 14, 1764 - August 1, 1833. The birth year differs from the one given in my baby book. Could someone have mis-copied? Could one be the birth year and the other the baptism year? Esther's birth date is given as April 10, 1772 and no death date is given. Their marriage date is given as Dec. 19, 1792. My uncle's family has Samuel's will deeding 250 acres of land in Pennsylvania to John Church Jones in exchange for John caring for Samuel and Esther "in their declining years." At the New England Historic Genealogical Soc. library I found Samuel & Esther's marriage date confirmed and her town of residence, Brookfield, Mass., and Samuel, Jr.'s residence, Shutesbury. This info was in a book referred to by someone in a previous post. I have read the town records of Shutesbury, Mass. up to about 1805, by which time Samuel & Esther were in Orange Co. Vermont, and found references to Samuel, Jr. There were also references to Samuel Jones owning pews in the local church. A list of Samuel & Esther's children in the family Bible includes Hayward Jones, b. July 26, 1810. This causes me to wonder if Mercy Hayward could be an ancestor of these Joneses. Hope this is helpful to someone. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Please reply if you can confirm or correct the following. William Panton married Catherine McNaughtan, a widow, (abt 1786 - 1879?) at Montreal in 1820. William was listed as a gardener at Cote des Neiges on the marriage entry. Catherine emigrated with her family in 1802 from Fortingall, Glen Lyon, Scotland. Her first marriage was to William Ferguson of Charlottenburgh, Ont. Her date of death is based on a church entry in the Cote des Neiges Presbyterian church records - because she lived at Quincy, Mass this may have to be confirmed. There are 4 children found in the church records, and possibly one more as noted below: Child 1: William born 1821, Montreal. He married sometime before 1850 and probably in Mass to a Charlotte M. (surname not known). Three children are identified via census. 1.a. Charlotte E. Panton, born abt 1854 in Mass who married first a Mr. Rice (children below) and second, a Mr Southwick and living in Brooklyn, NY, in 1900 They had three children, two of whom are found in census. They are 1.a.a. Catherine L. Rice born about 1881, possibly Maine who married about 1904 to Robert E. Linnell born abt 1883 Mass. Their children in 1920 were 1.a.a.a. Robert Linnell born about 1916 1.a.a.b. Harrison R. Linnell born about 1920 1.a.b. Susan P. Rice born abt 1884 Mass who married William H. Rice born about 1888, Mass. No children found to date 1.a.c. William H. Rice born 1857 Mass 1.b. William A. Panton born about 1859, Mass. He was a machinist in a shipyard. Later census shows him as single. 1.c. John A. Panton born about 1861 Mass. He married at Detroit, Michigan, in 1914 to Bessie L., (her 2nd marriage) born about 1881 New Hampshire. Hollis Hamel, a stepson, born 1905, Mass, is listed in the census. Her maiden name is not on the marriage entry but her parents were Horace and Mary. John Panton was a toolmaker in the automotive industry. 1.d. Joseph born about 1863 Mass. No further information. Child 2. John Ogilvie Panton born 1822. No further information has turned up. This child was baptized 10 days after birth, so he may not have been well. No burial entry has been found Child 3. Lawrence born 1825 Montreal and died 29 Apr 1909 at Jewett, Conn. He married a Jane C. Brown born 1836 Conn. And she died after 1909. He emigrated in 1836 to Quincy, Mass (probably), spent 20 years in Colorado, 10 years in California, and moved 1893 to Jewett. He married late and had no children. Child 4. Elizabeth born 1827 in Montreal. No other information but MAY be the Margaret listed below. Child 5. Margaret born about 1831 Canada and died after 1909. According to Lawrence's obituary, she lived in Nebraska with her son John E Cook and his wife Eva. Census records have her husband as George Cook of Nova Scotia and a daughter Isabel who must have died young. The forename is from census records and she may be the Elizabeth Child 4 whose forename is from the church entry. Note especially for Rhoda: a)the Southwick, Rice, Linney information is based strictly on census information that looks like a good fit. It may prove to be inaccurate. B) Catherine's death at Cote des Neiges in 1879 looks right for age and information, and the witnesses were both MacFarlane. And since I'm having a hard time finding Peter and Margaret, perhaps they, too, were in Cote des Neiges. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Her first marriage was to William Ferguson of Charlottenburgh, Ont. There are 4 children found in the church records, and possibly one more as noted below: Child 1: William born 1821, Montreal. He married sometime before 1850 and probably in Mass to a Charlotte M. (surname not known). Three children are identified via census. 1.a. Charlotte E. No burial entry has been found Child 3. 1. [Norfolk Co MA] HARDING, John of Weymouth and Gloucester
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: robertgillisnj Surnames: Tybbot, harding Whitmarsh Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.counties.norfolk/3185/mb.ashx Message Board Post: John Harding of Weymouth married, probably second, Widow Tybbot, relic of Walter Tybbot, 22: 2m: 1652 or 22 Apr 1652 in Gloucester. I am trying to find her given name; she is my 9th ggm. The marriage record does not say he was "of Weymouth". John Harding's daughter, Sarah or Mary, married a John Whitmarsh who was granted Administration of the estate of John Harding, 31 Oct 1682. The NEHGR has two John Hardings, one of Weymouth and the other of Medfield. The Medfield John may have been a nephew of the Weymouth John. Is there any death or marriage record in Weymouth or wherever the Whitmarshes settled for the widow of John Harding and John's daughter, (--?--) Whitmarsh.
