When my brother died of a heart attack in '94, my mother applied for the death benefit and had it applied to the funeral home costs. This is one of those cases where you need to think of variations on how a name might be submitted to SSA. My brother always went by Jim and then James. His name on his SS card was James M. Slaughter. On the SSDI he is listed as J M Slaughter. It wasn't until I found the SSDI at Rootsweb, with its advance search capability, that I was able to find him. I never thought of using just his initials.
