    1. RICE Surname - Association !
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, The RICE surname doesn't come up on the Lists too often, so I thought I would remind researchers that there is a "RICE Family Association." It is about the patriarch, (Deacon) Edmund RICE, of 1600's Sudbury ! http://www.edmund-rice.org/ Even though my great-great-grandfather, Charles Wellington RICE, was born in 1850 in Lubec, Maine, he is a "Deacon Edmund RICE" descendant ! I cannot quote "his line" from memory, but I can mention Jesse RICE of Marlborough, MA, and one of his sons, Ashabel RICE, who fought in the Revolutionary War ! After the War, Ashabel and Percissa (KNIGHT) RICE moved to "Maine", then over to Nova Scotia for a few years, and then back to "Maine." Their youngest son, Daniel V. RICE, was born in ~1803 in Maine, probably just after the large family returned there ! The majority of the family remained in the Lubec, ME, area. Daniel married Lucy McDANIEL or McDONALD who had been born in New Brunswick ~1811, and they had 10 children. Charles was their youngest, born in 1850. I believe that most of Charles' brothers remained in Washington County, Maine. But, I have had trouble finding the marriage information of the 4 sisters. But two things happened during the past week ! I received a photo of a gravestone from the cemetery in Medford - showing that Charles Wellington RICE was buried in a McNEAR / MacNEAR family plot ! A little investigating showed that Mrs. Amelia McNEAR was his sister ! Just this morning I heard that Amelia RICE and Charles McNEAR (both from Maine) married in Boston in 1870 ! So, I'm wondering if Amelia came down to Boston in the late 1860's, and brought her youngest brother down to Boston with her ! Also, someone reminded me of the 1850 census for Lubec, and I noticed that Amelia's twin sister, Emily, is not shown. So, she probably did not survive childhood ! (Note: that census showed Amelia at Age 10 (I think born in 1840), and yet the marriage record states she was 25 !) .... I have never joined the RICE Family Association, but I have contributed information on my line of RICE men to their large, extensive "data base." I understand it is quite an active organization, with several "local" people who act as officers ! And, I believe they have an "annual meeting" in MA ! Hope this helps someone ! Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. I forgot to mention that my great-great-grandparents, Charles and Adelaide (HUTCHINSON) RICE, had two daughters: Louise Wellington RICE and Edith Crosby RICE. They were born in Winchester in the 1870's, and then Charles and Adelaide "separated" probably during the 1890's (or by 1900). Charles Wellington RICE was somehow connected to a person or a family in Ashland, MA, as he seems to have spent time there, and died there in 1916 ! (Still a mystery !) But, he was buried with his sister's family in Medford ! Edith RICE was a life-long Children's Librarian in Arlington. During the mid-1900's, a large, important collection of children's books was donated to the University of Maine. And, the wealthy donor named it "The Edith C. RICE Collection" - after her long-time friend ! Louise RICE (and Edith) were probably visiting their RICE relatives in Lubec and Eastport, ME, when Louise "Lou" met George "Sanford" KIDDER from Princeton, Maine. They married there in 1898, but came back down to Winchester, MA, to live ! Unfortunately, "Sanford" ran into "problems," and around the time of his father's death in Princeton, Maine, he decided to move back there - basically abandoning his wife and 3 school-age children (1915 to 1920 timeframe). Mrs. Louise KIDDER inherited one of the HUTCHINSON Farms from her mother's cousins around 1930, but she had a great deal of trouble maintaining the very large property ! Her disabled son and his wife had to give it up in 1958 ! The matching "HUTCHINSON Farm" still exists, but most of the land has been sold off .. for the building of new houses ! (The IRWIN family owned that Farm for many years in 1940's to 1960's timeframe.)
