    1. Why you should verify even the published VRs

    3. Good morning, everyone. :-) We all know, or should know, that we need to verify everything. We know there are errors in the published VRs. Here is an excellent example from Marblehead. This is most important for newcomers to genealogy to examine all of the records and make appropriate notes in their files. Death SMITH, Hannah W., w. Jeremiah [F. GR1], childbed, Aug. 13, 1831, a. 18 y. [a. 15 y. 12 d. GR1] Birth DODD, Hannah White, d. Samuel and Jane, bp. Jan. 30, 1814. CR2 Marriage DODD, Hannah W., and Jeremiah F. Smith, May 19, 1831.* Quite obviously the gravestone record is very wrong. Hannah had to be at least 17. She could have been 18 if her parents had waited at least 5 months after her birth before she was baptized. If the gravestone record was misread and it said 18 y. 12 d, then she could have been b. 1 Aug 1814. Samuel and Jane had an older daughter, Jane, who was bp. 24 Sep 1809. Therefore, it would seem that they didn't wait and have all of their children baptized at the same time as sometimes happened. (BTW, Jeremiah m. Jane 2 years to the day after Hannah died. Assuming that record is correct.)
