It's not destroyed yet but it may be soon. Below is a copy of an e-mail from people on a Waldo County, Maine mailing list. Everyone needs to write to the Mayor of Belfast and let him know we do NOT want Maine's history destroyed. Be polite, of course, but firm. Here's the message: "Good Morning. For all of those people searching for ancestors in Waldo County, Maine this pertains to you. As a long time resident, and fairly new genealogy buff I have some information that is disturbing. There are a number of people in Belfast (where the Waldo County records are kept), that are wanting the records destroyed. There are only a few people that feel the importance about having the records available for everyone, but those few can not out weight the majority of the people who want them destroyed. The woman in charge of organizing/working with the records has been fighting them over this for some time now and her tenure will be up in a few weeks. After she is gone, there is a great possibility that the records will be lost forever. Here is a link to the City of Belfast. I would hate for those records to be gone. Those people who want them destroyed are thinking that it won't affect anyone or if it does it will only be a select few, they are wrong.
