    1. DURKEE - Cambridge - 1906

    3. Hello, I was wondering if anyone would have any knowledge of John W. DURKEE, of Cambridge, Massachusetts; my great-grandfather. He was born in Sandford, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, 1866. He left for the States sometime after 1890. We are descended from Phineas Durkee,[ b. Sept 16, 1730; son of Stephen; m. 1751 Phoebe Pearl; d. November 5, 1801. Phineas Durkee arrived in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in 1762. -- abstracted from: "Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Genealogies; Transcribed from the Yarmouth Herald; by George S. Brown] I have the family sheets from the "Society of Genealogy of Durkee", but I am trying to find out more about John W. and his son Roy, my grandfather. Roy [Leroy] was born in Sandford, Yarmouth County in 1890. At some point Roy's parents (John W. and Annie Shaw of Yarmouth, County) divorced. Roy is not with his mother, for the 1901 Canadian census [who has, by this time, remarried]; John W. Durkee I was unable to locate in the census.Roy was in Peabody, Essex, Massach! usetts for the U.S. Military Registration of June 5, 1917, and marries my grandmother [Maud Jeffery of Nova Scotia] December 1, 1917 in Peabody. I have not checked the Boston passengers lists yet, but it is at the top of my list of "Things to do". My grandparents returned to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia sometime after 1918, where Roy died in 1921. The reason I am posting to MAMIDDLE-L is that John W. Durkee remarried October 13, 1906, in Cambridge [age 38; divorced; 2nd marriage; in the restaurant business -- Bride: Lillian CROFT; age 24 b. Nova Scotia; daughter of Wallace and Hannah (MELVIN) CROFT -- (Society of Genealogy of Durkee)] Besides wondering where he was living and his life in general, the "in the restaurant business" is what I am most curious about - it could be he was a waiter or an owner - doesn't matter which, but I am curious. I checked the MAMIDDLE-L archives and there where a few hits for Durkee -- Loretta Durkee DURKEE, Albert Paul; 80; Acton MA; Acton Beacon; 1965-10-21 Durkee Farm I would greatly appreciate any help with this project; especially if I could connect with someone with an interest in the DURKEEs of Cambridge. Thank you. Kind Regards, Douglas Fevens Halifax, Nova Scotia
