Hello, When I looked at the web site for the Billerica Historical Society this week, I happened to notice that they are now offering free maps of the historic homes which currently exist in town ! I visited a member of the Historical Society the next day, who has his business office in the historic "Faulkner House" in the Center.* And, he gave me a copy of the map. There are 93 houses, buildings, and places mentioned, but I thought I'd just list the places which have a surname attached to them: BROWN, BALDWIN, SHELDON, UNDERHILL, ALLEN, ROGERS, HILL, FARMER, FOSTER, LOCKE, DANFORTH, HOWE, POLLARD, PRESTON, BOWERS, POLLARD, MANNING, KOHLRAUSCH, BENNETT, SEXTON, SHEDD, MITCHELL, JAQUITH, STOKER, GORHAM, STEARNS, BRIDGE, FAULKNER, RICHARDSON, GRAY, WYMAN, DUTTON, TALBOT, CLARK, SPAULDING, RUGGLES, PARKER, KIDDER, PATTEN, KNOWLES, BLANCHARD In some cases, there are several homes for the same family. In the cases of "inns or taverns," sometimes the buildings are known by different names than they were in past centuries. For instance, I am wondering if what is listed here as "The Tavern at the Corner," was originally "the RICHARDSON Tavern" at "the Corner." FYI: Originally, way back when, people wanted "the Corner" to be -- Billerica Center -- but the people living "at the top of the hill" won the debate ! Some of the houses go back to the 1700's. But, while driving around different towns, I've noticed that many more "1700's houses" exist in Carlisle and Chelmsford - than in Billerica. The most well known in Billerica is the "MANNING Manse" built in 1696. It's near the Chelmsford line on Rt. 129 and I've noticed possibly 2 other MANNING homes on the same road but in Chelmsford. Also, please remember that during the 1720's, several towns annexed off of Billerica, so some of the very early homes in Billerica - would now be situated in Bedford, Carlisle, and Tewksbury, etc. One other name which appears on this map is NUTTING. And, the Town Historian might disagree with me, but I don't think a NUTTING ever lived in Billerica. But, yet, the good-size "Nutting's Lake" exists. My "guess" is that Mr. NUTTING lived just down the "Middlesex Turnpike" from the lake (in then Woburn) and might have spent a lot of time there ! (Not mentioned on the map is the small "WINNING's Pond.") This is the web site for the Billerica Historical Society. If you wish a copy of the map sent to you, you might want to send them a note with a SASE enclosed - but a 9x12 manila envelope - with possibly 2 stamps on it. http://www.billericahistorical.org/ The web site for the Billerica Library also has some historical data on it - see "Local History."
