Hello, This morning there is an article in "The Lowell Sun" about the Town of Wilmington agreeing to purchase "The BUTTERS Farm" -- which will be listed with the Registry of National Historical Treasures. You can probably find more information on this 300-year-old house on-line, or in previous newspaper reports. A brief description of the problem is that "a developer" bought most of the rest of the farmland surrounding the historic house and, of course, built a new subdivision of houses on it, and he didn't want the historic house -- in his way ! Coincidentally, I just picked up the "History of Carlisle" and the book opened up to a page showing a picture of Mrs. Mary GREEN. The paragraph next to it says: "Mrs. Mary A. Green, only child of Joseph and Mary E. (Munroe) Butters, was born in Burlington, Mass., July 22, 1853. She comes of Revolutionary stock. Her great-great-grandfather, Samuel Butters, 2nd, of Wilmington, marched on Lexington alarm, April 19, 1775, in Capt. Freeborn Moulton's company of minute men, of Monson, and in Colonel Donnelson's regiment. Her great-grandfather, Joseph Butters, of Wilmington, son of Samuel Butters, 2nd, enlisted during the war of the Revolution in Captain Wright's company, Enoch Hale's regiment of New Hampshire, to reinforce garrison at Ticonderoga. Her great-grandfather, Jonas Munroe, on her mother's side was a descendant from William Munroe, who settled in Lexington (then Cambridge Farms). Said Jonas Munroe of Carlisle (then Billerica) was in Solomon Pollard's company of militia, Colonel Green's regiment, which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775; service one day; also Capt. Solomon Kidder's Company, Colonel Brook's regiment; return endorsed '1776' and probably made up at White Plains; ....." A summary of the rest of the paragraph goes: Mary BUTTERS received her early education in Burlington and then received 3 years of private instruction before she entered Mt. Holyoke Seminary. She next taught school both in Burlington and Carlisle. In 1880 she married Thomas A. GREEN, son of Capt. Thomas and Maria GREEN, and came to Carlisle, where she has since lived. She was a very active citizen of Carlisle, holding Town offices and became a Trustee of the Library, and then later the Librarian of the Gleason Public Library. This is just an FYI to whoever might be interested ! Betty (near Lowell, MA)
