    1. Thomas GREEN, Asa GREEN, MA to NH to VT
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I believe I posted a few weeks ago about the extended family of Zacheus and Elizabeth (KIDDER) GREEN who lived in Carlisle, MA. Zacheus was probably born in Concord, MA. There were GREEN families in Carlisle for many generations, and "a GREEN house" still exists in Carlisle Center. I am trying to learn more about the 10 children of Zacheus and Elizabeth GREEN, so that I can have the information included in an updated version of "the KIDDER book." So far, I have only found some information about the oldest son, Thomas Kidder GREEN, b1768, and their youngest son, Asa GREEN, b1785. And, I was wondering if anyone knew about the other 8 children ! In 1793, on the death of his grandfather, Thomas KIDDER, Thomas GREEN inherited that "large property" in Westford, MA. But, he seems to have only lived there for a few years, as, when he married in 1797, he was said to have been from Westmoreland, NH.* He married Betsey COGSWELL of Littleton, MA, and they reportedly had 5 children, 4 daughters, and a son, Cogswell Kidder GREEN. Mrs. Betsey GREEN seems to have died within a few months of giving birth to her 10th child. And, sometime between ~1825 and ~1840, Thomas GREEN moved to Michigan ! (Possibly with a stop in Ohio.) Most of the daughters seem to have remained in NH, but the son, Cogswell GREEN, was reported to have married in Michigan ! The only thing I can find on Asa GREEN is a paragraph in the "History of Carlisle, MA." "Asa Green, son of Zacheus Green of Carlisle, graduated from Williams College in 1807, and settled in Brattleboro, Vermont, where he practiced law and also had the appointment of postmaster." In the chapter on burials in Carlisle, MA, there are stones for: Asa GREEN, died Apr. 1853, Age 82, and Mrs. Esther GREEN, died Sept. 1826, Age 51. The date of death and age are slightly off for Asa GREEN, b1785, so there might have been another Asa GREEN, b~1771, who remained in Carlisle. Also, Zacheus and Elizabeth GREEN are buried in the "GREEN Cemetery" in Carlisle. ... I have the "History of Carlisle" from the Library for a few more days. If anyone would like me to look someone up for them, please let me know. Betty (near Lowell, MA) * As a life-long resident of MA (not far from the NH border), I was surprised that I had never heard of the town of Westmoreland, NH. I looked it up and discovered it is west of Keene, NH, and directly on the VT border. It started out as one of the "Connecticut River Fort Towns." FYI: I just remembered that I didn't look in the chapter on burials in the GREEN Cemetery in Carlisle, MA, for other members of Zacheus' family. I'll list the names mentioned, which I haven't already mentioned above: Lt. Asa GREEN, died 1785 at Age 41, and wife, Mrs. Abi GREEN, died 1793, Age 49 Capt. John GREEN, died 1793, Age 85, and wife, Mrs. Martha GREEN, died 1792, Age 83 Isaiah GREEN, died 1855, "Aet. 83," and wife, Mrs. Hannah GREEN, died 1845, "Aet. 69" Hannah L. C. GREEN, died 1897, Age 90 (unknown whether she married) Lois GREEN, died 1854, Age 94 Nathan GREEN, died 1818, "Aet. 83," and wife, Mrs. Lois GREEN, died 1821, Age 83 Samuel GREEN, died 1829, "Aet. 30" Nathan GREEN, Jr., died 1818, "Aet. 55," and wife, Mrs. Sarah GREEN, died 1833, "Aet. 61" Leonard GREEN, died 1838, Age 78, and wife, Mrs. Thankful GREEN, died 1815, Age 55, and wife, Mrs. Lydia GREEN, died 1826, Age 57 Samuel GREEN, died 1816, "Aet. 76," and wife, Mrs. Rebekah GREEN, died 1817, "Aet. 75" Jefferson GREEN, died 1832, "Aet. 30" Silas GREEN, died 1833, "Aet. 59," and wife, Mrs. Elizabeth GREEN, died 1836, "Aet. 61" Cyrus GREEN, died 1855, Age 55 Ephraim GREEN, died 1824, "Aet. 24" (Deacon) John GREEN, died 1858, Age 88, and wife, Mrs. Mary GREEN, died 1817, "Aet. 47," and wife, Mrs. Anna S. GREEN, died 1865, "Aet. 83" Joseph GREEN, died 1893, Age 64, and wife, Mrs. Martha A. GREEN, died 1857, "Aet. 25" Tilly GREEN, died 1849, "Aet. 69," and wife, Mrs. Patty GREEN, died 1849, "Aet. 69" Benjamin GREEN, son of Tilly & Patty GREEN, died 1859, "Aet. 45" There are many others buried in the GREEN Cemetery, but they have other surnames. (I am guessing that "Aet." means something like "estimated age.") FYI: On another page of the "History of Carlisle," the people holding the first offices in town are mentioned, and they include: Capt. John GREEN, Lt. Asa GREEN, and Samuel GREEN, and Zacheus GREEN. So, there must have been at least 4 GREEN families in the early history of Carlisle, MA. FYI: The first chapter of the book states that it took "many" years for the residents of "the northern district of Concord, MA" and the residents of the "BLOOD's FARM" part of Billerica, MA, to get Court approval to separate from the "mother towns." Carlisle was finally incorporated in 1754. So, even though Zacheus GREEN was reported to have been born in Concord, MA, in 1731/2, son of John and Martha GREEN (see above), the family was probably living in "the northern district" of Concord - so their home became part of Carlisle, MA, in 1754.
