And they have been publishing larger-print obituaries, which offer more information than other newspapers. In yesterday's paper, there were 2 articles which might interest someone: "Broken Stones, forgotten heritage" "With rakes and shovels, volunteers restoring long-neglected Claypit Cemetery" " .... Claypit Cemetery, a historical site long neglected and forgotten by many, sits behind Brunswick Zone on Pawtucket Blvd.. A lot of people don't know it's there because it's just in the woods ..... For more than a year, and 8th grade teacher in Dracut has spearheaded efforts to clean up the abandoned cemetery......." My note: I seem to remember from an article last year that there was controversy whether the graveyard was in Lowell or Dracut, or whether it was originally in Dracut but is currently in Lowell. Last spring I stopped to talk to a man living in a 1600's house on Varnum Ave., and asked if the graveyard was near their house. His father walked up and said that it was "way back in the woods" and I probably should not even try to find it. www.lowellsun.com And another article: "WW II Grads, Reunited" "Lowell High's Class of '44 share memories of historic time" "... Nearly 100 members of the Class of 1944 at Lowell High School were missing the day that .. the Headmaster .. handed out their diplomas. They had good reason. Just 8 days earlier on June 6, the "D-Day invasion" had begun. ..... Yesterday 85 members of that class gathered in Chelmsford ....." And, on the Obituary page, there is one for "Ann L. (MATTHEWS) CARUSO" and her birth was unusual: Chelmsford: Ann Letitia CARUSO, 91, formerly of Lynn, died Friday in Lowell. ..... Ann was born on Oct. 3, 1918, in a tent on the grounds of the Gloucester Hospital in Gloucester .. during the catastrophic flu epidemic of 1918. She was the daughter of Nelson and Clara (BURNS) MATTHEWS. ...... .. And, I forgot to mention an article from Sept. 23rd: "New Jeanne D'Arc Headquarters Rich with City History" "Five-Floor Celebration of Roots" "It is almost audible. The whoosh of the raging waters of the Western and Northern canals rushing through the turbine chambers of the Tremont Mills Power House, providing electric power to the Suffolk and Tremont mills, the way they did 150 years ago. Today the turbines are gone, the water blocked by a cement wall. What is left are the towering, hand-built stone walls and the massive iron tunnels that lead into the chambers. For decades these remnants ... remained buried under the ruins of a building long forgotten. ....." www.lowellsun.com Betty (near Lowell, MA) To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to MAMIDDLE-request@rootsweb.com with the word "unsubscribe" in the subject and the body of the email with no additional text. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to MAMIDDLE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
