Hello, I was reviewing my copy of an old article of the "history of Turkey Hill" in Arlington this week, and I noticed something I hadn't remembered. To start with, "Turkey Hill" would have originally been in Charlestown in the 1600's and up through the 1700's and into 1800's. The entire hill was owned by a series of families, until parts of it started being sold off. My ancestor, John HUTCHINSON, started buying all the parts back, so they would be included in what became the very large HUTCHINSON Farm of what is now Winchester, MA. In very early 1800's part of the farm would have been in Arlington. The entire farm covered the top of the "Hill District" of what became Winchester. In the early 1800's, 6 HUTCHINSON siblings, 3 sons, 3 daughters, started living on the farm. The original "homestead" would have stood from 1720's until it burned down in 1880's. Around 1840 a second, smaller farmhouse had been built across the street. I believe my ancestor, Jacob, built it. I haven't got the story straight, yet, but for some reason his married sister and her husband were living in that house. They were William and Elizabeth DODGE. I believe this couple had 4 daughters. But that family and her married sister and their older brother, John HUTCHINSON, all moved to Brooklyn, NY, and remained there. - What I had noticed in that article is that Mrs. Elizabeth DODGE had inherited "Turkey Hill." And the article said that 2 of her daughters still owned it in 1912. That is when they sold it - to a company. From old reports written by the HUTCHINSON's, and from old deeds, it seems that the 3 siblings who had moved to NY remained in close contact with their 3 siblings in Winchester. And, some of them still owned land in Winchester (and Arlington). I am interested in what happened to that DODGE family. Does anyone have information on who their daughters married? (I was suprised to find out this morning that it seems I had not posted queries about them before. I checked the DODGE Boards and Lists.) What I did find is a posting I made 4 years ago on this List which involved information I had found in old deeds in Cambridge. I don't remember whether I ever tried to find out which family William DODGE had come from.
