    1. [MAMiddle] Hannah Jane KERR in Canada - was she Jane KERR in MA?
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I have decided to stop procrastinating on one particular project (of which I have many), and I decided to try to get my male, KERR cousin to participate in a DNA test. But, I knew there was one more "male KERR" related to us - a very distant cousin. I wrote to him in Maine, and he responded on Saturday. He is willing to do the test. I had sent him a few copies of old photos in the envelope, and decided to send him a few more in an e-mail. One I wanted to send was of a group of family members of my grandfather when he was a teen or young adult. My sister said we should definitely sent him this participar one. But the one in my computer did not have notes on who the people were. So, I went into my box of Kerr papers and found the copy of the picture where someone had written down who each person was. When I looked at the names, I made a discovery. There was an older lady sitting there with the name, Jane Kerr. I didn't know anyone in my grandfather's family with that name. But, a few minutes later "the light bulb." His father had 4 siblings. They were all born in the 1850/1860 timeframe in the Prov. of Quebec. He and one sister came down to MA in 1870's, and the parents and 2 younger brothers came down in 1880's. After 7 yrs. I have never been able to find out what happened to the other sister. Her name was Hannah Jane KERR, born ~1857. Unfortunately, as often happens, there was another lady with the same name in the same area. Researchers believe that it was the other one who married and had children. I've been assuming William's sister, Hannah Jane, had either married and remained in Canada or had died young. But, I hadn't thought that she might have remained single. Either way I hadn't been able to find her in census records in either Canada or US. I checked again yesterday, and couldn't find her in 1901 or 1911 in Canada -- if she had remained in Compton County, PQ. * I checked the 1900 and 1910 census for MA, and found one Jane KERR, but she was a widow and an older lady. So, that was her married name. Now, up in Canada there were many "kissin' cousins" so that is a possibility. Back to the photo, I put more thoughts together. I had remembered that my grandfather was about 15 and his younger sister was about 10 when their father died unexpectedly in 1905 in Everett. And Ruby is shown to be about 10 in this old photo. So, I'm now wondering if this is a group of the family members who had gathered at William's "wake" in Jan. 1905. If that is true, and William's sister, Hannah Jane, was still alive, that could be her in the photo. But, the lady in the photo seems to be in her 60's. Hannah Jane from Canada would be around 50 in 1905, if that is when the photo was taken. One question is: Does anyone know of a Mrs. Jane KERR in or around Everett, MA (Middlesex County) who would have been a widow with 4 children in 1910. This is the lady I found in census. She is from Canada, but in 1910 she is 75. KERR, JANE (1910 U.S. Census) MASSACHUSETTS , MIDDLESEX, 1-WD EVERETT Age: 75, Female, Race: WHITE, Born: CANA Series: T624 Roll: 597 Page: 39 She is living with her married daughter and her husband, and the handwriting is hard but it looks like either MORRESEY or MORSEY or MOREZE. They have a very young son, Arthur, and the wife had been born in CAN / ENG. Oops, I just noticed that the mother had been born in Canada, but her parents were born in the US and Ireland. I know there were other KERR families in Everett and Malden, MA, around 1900, so this Jane KERR in the old picture could have been a friend instead of a relative. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) * Robert KERR and Eliza HENDERSON had been born in Argenteuil County, P.Q., in 1827, with their parents arriving there in 1823. When they married, they then had 5 children: William, Hannah Jane, Mary Ann, Joseph, and Robert. William came down to MA and married Elizabeth HANNAH. Mary came down and married William McINNIS. Joseph and Robert came down and married 2 female cousins from Canada. I can't think of their names at this second, but the names are in the archives. Both couples left Everett, MA, and moved to Everett, WA !! Around 1860, this Kerr family left Argenteuil County which is north of the St. Lawrence River and moved south to Compton County which is near the US border. There were other KERR families there and we're trying to find out if they were somehow related.
