    1. [MAMiddle] William EXFORD/ Polly CRAFT marriage
    2. Dotty Sprague Cole
    3. This couple who married in Ashby, Middlesex, MA on 01 October 1799 would be my 4th great grandparents. We have researched them and their descendants thoroughly. However, we never have been able to take William Exford back another generation. Polly Craft may have been the child of Stephen Craft and Anna Archer from Norwalk, CT. The birth of their daughter Polly in Norwalk on 06 February 1779 is about correct for our Polly who appears in the 1850 census living with her daughter and son-in-law Phoebe Kentfield in Fowler, Saint Lawrence, NY where we know the family moved in the 1830's. 1850 United States Federal Census > New York > Saint Lawrence > Fowler Kentfield, Harrison 46 farmer MA Kentfield, Phoebe 48 VT Kentfield, Jane 21 VT Kentfield, Elias 17 farmer NY Kentfield, Philanda 11 NY Kentfield, Henry H. 9 NY Kentfield, George 1 NY Exford, Mary 73 MA The marriage of William Exford of Whitingham, VT and Polly Craft appears in the Mass Vital Records Project: EXFORD, William, of Whitingham, VT, and Polly Craft, Oct. 1, 1799. Incidentally there are no other marriages for Exford's nor Craft's listed in Ashby. William Exford first appears in Whitingham records in a land purchase a "deed of deliverance" by Wheeler Jr. of Whitingham, VT to William Exford of Whitingham dated June 9, 1800, conveying 58 acres of land in Bratton's Grant for $78. There are 14 other land transfers, the last one 1n 1826, a sale. William Exford appears first in census records in Whitingham in 1820 1820 United States Federal Census > Vermont > Windham > Whitingham Wm Exford males - 1 (10-16), 1 (16-26), 1 (26-45) females - 3 (under 10), 1 (10-16), 1 (16-26), 1 (26-45) He appears in 1840 in Fowler. 1840 United States Federal Census > New York > Saint Lawrence > Fowler 1 male 60-70 and 1 female 60-70 We have not found him in any other censuses. He died in Fowler 19 February 1848. We have found many permutations of this name some of which may be relatives and some not. Some of these folks; i.e. Eckford's are from Scotland. If anyone has any idea of where we should be searching to discover William Exford's origins, we would very much appreciate hearing from you. Dotty Sprague Cole Lake Mary, FL but born in Brattleboro, VT
