    3. Hi Shelley, These girls / women appear to live in the "mill" area of Lowell and might have been "mill girls." This is especially since they were all Irish surnames. So, they might have all been teens or in their 20's. 3. Hi Shelley, Out of curiousity, I checked census information and found out WELCH was a very popular name. In 1880 there were well over 4000 people in MA, and over 800 in Middlesex County. And what is surprising is that there were dozens of people with the same first-names, like John's and James' and Mary's and Catherine's, etc. And many in Lowell. I checked and there were not quite so many in 1900. Is there any indication what ages Katie and her friends are? There were several Catherine's and Katies in Lowell. From my childhood, I would have had an autograph book from 6th grade in grammar school. But in 1960's I would have been getting signatures in my high school year book. 1. [MAMiddle] Mitochondrial DNA of female line descenants of Anne King died Sudbury 1642
    2. Dora Smith
    3. I posted what I have so far traced of my mitochondrial lineage, with my haplogroup and mutations from my complete mitochondrial sequence, at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=doramitochondria&id=I511 My emigrant maternal line ancestor was Anne, the wife of Thomas King of Sudbury. She died there in 1642 after giving birth to her last child. Four of her daughters married and left descendants. Three of them married sons of Edmund Rice, one of the better known and more prolific founding fathers of New England. He was one of the proprietors and early leaders of the town of Sudbury. He was bipolar, and a land speculator, which in those days was rather like my bipolar former landlord buying and selling web sites on the internet. Every time his mood cycled down he got very crotchety, didn't get along with anyone, and left to found a new town, taking with him members of his inner circle, some or more likely most of whom also carried bipolar disorder. He and his fellow travelers were leaders, and many of his kin actively founded other towns near Sudbury and Marlborough. This small group of families proceeded to form little subgroups of families that largely married each other for five generations. It is not proven that all of Thomas King's daughters had the same mother. Little is known of Anne, and she may not have been his first wife. She was not Anne Collins, and I find the evidence that she was Anne Tyce of Shaftesbury unconvincing. People have read together two lines of a will that don't grammatically or logically go together, and there are a number of logical inconsistencies. It is proven that Thomas King was from Shaftesbury, but there is only the shakiest of evidence that any of his children were born there. The family was prosperous and widely connected; Thomas's nephew the mayor of Shaftesbury married the daughter of a business contact of his father's 30 miles away, and people in the textile business in Shaftesbury travelled and lived as far afield as India. In Sudbury Thomas was a leading citizen but extremely quiet, and he may have been just about invisible wherever he went. It would be helpful if descendants of other daughters of Thomas - my own well documented line is from Elizabeth - would be tested. There is the complicating factor that the HVR1 and HVR2 mutations, which is what most people get tested, form an extremely common haplogroup H haplotype - 16519C, 263G, 309.1C (plus or minus a C at that location), 315.1C. The number of C's at 309 is very changeable and virtually has no meaning. It takes atleast an H deep clade test to establish the coding region mutation that defines haplogroup H1, which encompasses a third to half of all the people in haplogroup H. A definitive match can only be shown by a complete sequence, which produces two unique coding region mutations. I am interested in any health consequences of these mutations. Both are protein-changing mutations to a working gene; specifically the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 gene. Any effects can't be earthshaking as large numbers of members of this lineage have lived into their 80's and 90's, and some family groupings within it acquired reputations for longevity. On the other hand, I suspect that most members of this lineage who live to be old die of often longstanding, slow developing atherosclerosis. Mutations to the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 gene could easily have both effects. The timing of this seems to vary as greatly as that due to any gene; from one's 60's to over age 100. The guy who lived to be over 100 was still walking a mile every day to visit people, and it's highly doubtful that that's coincidence. Exercise multiplies mitochondria, lowers blood lipids, and combats atherosclerosis. Yours, Dora Smith Austin, TX tiggernut24@yahoo.com

    2. Dora Smith
    3. Susan mentioned in her e-mail in which she sent me the page, that she couldn't afford it but renewed her membership anyway. This gives me an idea. I could afford it if someone went in on it with me. What about the idea of combined memberships - even paired? On unemployment and just had a particularly problematic case of appendicitis, there is sure a big difference between paying $35 and paying $70. Obviously if three or four people went in on it it would come down further. Yours, Dora Smith Austin, TX tiggernut24@yahoo.com

    1. [MAMiddle] John TRUMBULL, Artist, 1700's
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I was watching "Antiques Roadshow" on TV last night, and someone brought in a "print" of the "Battle of Bunker Hill" by John TRUMBULL. I remembered the name so I could look him up this morning. Turns out his family was from CT. But, according to the appraiser, John was in Boston (Charlestown?) while the battle was going on, and he took sketches of what he saw. I looked him up this morning, and it seems he created a lot of prints and paintings, etc. http://www.americanrevolution.org/trumbio.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Trumbull http://historyiselementary.blogspot.com/2006/12/trumbulls-battle-of-bunker-hill.html I don't think this surname is mentioned too often. So, I thought I'd offer it as an FYI. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. Another of the TRUMBULL prints has been on the show: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/archive/200404A08.html

    1. [MAMiddle] KERR families, Malden, Everett, MA, 1875 to present
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I've decided to try harder this new year to get one of my KERR, male, relatives to participate in a "DNA test." Many, many people in Canada and the US are trying to find out the origins of a KERR / HENDERSON family-group which arrived in Canada in the 1820's. They had well over 40 children between them, and thus have many descendants. And, none of us can find out who their parents were back in - Ireland. My mother worked on our family-tree in the 1970's, and she wrote up a basic description of her great-grandparents, Robert and Elizabeth (HENDERSON) KERR, and their descendants. They were born in Canada in 1827, and came down to MA, probably in 1880's. Four out of their 5 children came down to MA, also. Their oldest was William KERR who married near Boston to Elizabeth HANNAH. Their youngest 2 sons married near Boston and then moved to Washington State. They never had children. So, Robert and Eliza KERR only had descendants through their son, William. William and Elizabeth had 6 children / 3 sons, but their middle son died at 18 and never got a chance to marry. I am descended from their youngest son. I had found a descendant of their oldest son, Joseph, a few years ago. She responded to my letter and told me one brother had passed and the other brother lived in Maine. I just found his address and will be mailing a letter to him tomorrow. Joseph and Minnie (PETERSON) KERR had 4 children / 3 sons. My mother was able to find out some information on the youngest son, Fred KERR; he and his wife, Emma, always lived in Everett, MA. But she was not able to find information on the 2 older sons. She believes Arthur KERR had one child, but she did not know whether it was a son or daughter. The 2nd son, Kenneth KERR, had 4 children / one son, Kenneth, Jr. But she was not able to find out anything about him. (These children would have been born in the 1900-1920 timeframe.) I was wondering if anyone knew of the Arthur KERR family or the Kenneth KERR family, which would have been based in the Everett and Malden area. Of the male descendants of Robert and Eliza KERR (from Canada), so far, I only have one male cousin, one uncle, who is mostly estranged from the family, and the "distant cousin" in Maine. So, I'm curious if there is another male descendant. I've been chatting with other KERR researchers about DNA, and it has been strongly recommended that I use this site. But, I should use the CARR group instead of the KERR group. https://www.familytreedna.com/Default.aspx?c=1 Betty (near Lowell, MA) (Next year I will try to get a male relative with the LEWIS name to do a DNA test. That would be the only other surname I would want to make connections with.)
