    1. [MAMiddle] James Marshea, jeweller, Cambridge
    2. Hello, I am new to the list and trying to find family information on James W. Marshea, born in Liverpool in 1845 and settled in Cambridge by 1880. James was a jeweler. His wife was Julia ? and there were 3 children, Marian, Florence and Charles. This family has ties to my Rawlins family. I would appreciate any information that can be added. Thanks, Bev W

    1. [MAMiddle] Famous Artists from New England ?? (METCALF)
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, "Antiques Roadshow" was on when I got up this morning, and one of the items being appraised was a painting. The appraiser said the artist had the last name, METCALF, and he was born in Lowell. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willard_Metcalf http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/archive/200701A18.html I took a quick look at census information and there were a few METCALF's in Lowell, MA, in the late 1800's. But, I'm not seeing an obvious couple for having Willard in the1880's. Just curious if anyone has a "famous artist" on their family-tree. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. "This Old House" is on now, and they are working on an old house in Roxbury, MA. And they just did a little segment on the very early history of Roxbury. A house built in mid-1700's and a wooden-church built ~1800 - are not something people usually think of when thinking about Roxbury. FYI: Roxbury is a neighborhood within Boston, Massachusetts USA. It was one of the first towns founded in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roxbury,_Boston

    1. [MAMiddle] YOUNG surname, 1700's
    2. Betty
    3. Hi Jacqueline, I research a YOUNG family which lived in Killingly, CT, during the early to mid-1800's. I have information on their ancestors, but it's not handy. I don't think they originated in MA. I just checked census information and there were only 85-90 YOUNG households in MA between 1790 and 1800. And only ~8 in Worcester County and none in Templeton. The majority of the families / people were in Barnstable County. And, for the KERR / HENDERSON great-grandfather and his grandparents, I research Argenteuil County, Prov. of Quebec, first, and his family moved from there to Compton County 1860's. So, I'm on the QC-ETANGLO List for the "Eastern Townships." Have you checked the archives of that List for the YOUNG name? While looking at the first names for the YOUNG's in 1790 and 1800, I spotted an unusual name. There are other uncommon first names. I'm not seeing a George.* YOUNG, HETATIAH WID (1800 U.S. Census) MASSACHUSETTS , ESSEX, GLOUCESTER Series: M32 Roll: 14 Page: 77 Just an FYI for you. Betty (near Lowell, MA) * Just a reminder for researchers that in those early census years, a lot of the first names were abbreviated on the census pages. So, if looking for a William, you would also need to look at the whole page for a Wm.

    1. [MAMiddle] Old Graveyard in Tewksbury
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, There's been an old graveyard in Tewksbury that I've wanted to walk around for 10 years. It was so nice outside yesterday that I didn't want to walk around inside a store. One reason I hadn't visited it before because it is not a convenient place to park and walk in. It's at the intersection of 2 busy streets, Main St. and Shawsheen St. (Rt. 38). Another problem yesterday, one of the streets was closed because of flooding. And, when I got up into the property, I saw that flooding was right up against the other 2 sides of the graveyard. 3 of the stones were within inches of the water. I had thought that there might be a KIDDER stone there, and I was correct. It was for either Jedidiah or Jeruthedah (sp?) KIDDER, and the smaller stone for his wife, Abigail. The largest set of stones was for the THOMPSON name. There is no obvious name for this graveyard but I can guess it might be referred to locally as the Thompson graveyard. Some of the usual names were there, if you know the history of Billerica (Tewksbury annexed off in the 1730's). This graveyard is not in the best condition; it could use some clean-up and making several stones stand up again. The only other visitor in the graveyward was a "garden snake" - another sign of SPRING ! (And a flock of ducks or geese flying down into the "swollen pond.") Just an FYI for you. Betty (near Lowell, MA) (I'm on a non-genealogy Town List, and this town has had a lot of flooding - because of its location. They were talking about the year they had as much flooding and it was 1996. But, if my memory is working, I think there was another spring of bad flooding a little after that. I seem to remember that there was so much water that .. gravestones .. were being uprooted and moving. And, in one case, some stones in possibly a cemetery in Winchester were seen - floating away down a swollen stream. It might have been beside the current train tracks - and those tracks were built in early-1800's to go along the route of the "Old Middlesex Canal.") .. By the way, last fall I noticed an old graveyard right on the edge of Rt. 128 in the Peabody area. And, a few weeks ago I took a Sunday-drive on Saturday and drove to Maine. While on Rt. 95, I noticed a very tiny, old graveyard - right alongside that major highway. Nothing was around it. It might have been in the Falmouth or Yarmouth area.

    1. [MAMiddle] Meetings coming up during March
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I just checked on-line and was reminded there are genealogy meetings coming up on the 20th and 27th, both at the Chelmsford, MA, Library: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~maglgc/ And the "tour of the Lowell Cemetery" (MA) should be coming up soon. It's usually posted in "The Lowell Sun" .. but only a week before. That reminds me that the "tour of the Forefather's Burial Ground" in Chelmsford should be coming up soon. I just checked and that's not till the end of April (depending on weather), but there is a "talk" on March 28. http://www.chelmhist.org/calendar.htm Meetings are coming up in March and April in Lynnfield, MA: http://www.esog.org/ Please add to the List. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. I like it when "genealogy clubs" hold their meetings on Saturdays. I sincerely wish that Historical Societies in the area would hold their meetings on Saturdays. I'd bet they get a better attendance at meetings. Actually, I'd love to start-up a club with a proposed title: "Billerica and Chelmsford Morning Genealogists Group" (BCMGG) - alternating meetings on a "Wednesday morning" (for example) at the libraries once a month !! (It would include research for all the towns which annexed off of Billerica and Chelmsford during the 1700's, and the Town of Lowell annexing off just after 1800.)

    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I was at a consignment shop in Chelmsford last week, and they had a selection of "yearbooks" from Lowell High School for sale. Maybe 8 of them, and they varied in years, from 1920's to 1950's. If anyone is interested in Lowell High School, you might want to go look at them. Or, is anyone connected to the Lowell Historical Society? I've visited this shop many times, so I know they have a selection of "old photos" on the wall behind the counter, and I think some of them are school pictures. (I have no connection to anything sold at that shop.) For those in MA, I think SPRING is near ! :o) Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. You can sometimes find old "high school year books" being sold on-line. But some Sellers have priced them too high for my thoughts.

And it is free to... -David MAINE List Administrator ------Original Message------ From: Jackisr@aol.com Sender: mamiddle-bounces@rootsweb.com To: mamiddle@rootsweb.com ReplyTo: mamiddle@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MAMiddle] OT - is anyone on list using a mac and usinggenealogysoftware Sent: Mar 2, 2010 11:51 AM Thanks for your reply. This info is not for me - I have a new pc and would never switch to a mac because I am so used to a pc. This is information I am hoping to get for people who contact me for help with genealogy research - my first question to them is what kind of software do you have and lately ran into people with mac's and didn't know what to tell them. I have been doing my Genealogy on my PC as it has my old Family Tree Maker and I just updated my copy of Legacy so that I could go thru my Family File and clean up my Locations and Sources in the hopes of Exporting the File to the MAC. I have found one Genealogy program called MacFamilyTree which has a lot of 3D graphics and is amazingly cool. Dunno how hard it is going to be to learn, though. I hear excellent reveiws on Reunions which is THE top-rated Genealogy app for MAC. It is $99.95 so I have not tried that one yet, but imagine I will, in the end. Try the MacTamily Tree and see if you like it. It is very different from anythig I have ever had on my PC. If you don't like that, I would suggest Reunions if you want to put out the mony. I think MacFamilyTree was betwen $39 and $59 or so... Good luck. I have been Googling for a good Genealogy app for my MAC ever since Christmas and these are the two best I have found. Let me know if you find anything else that you like.
