BUT the hours are limited and they will charge you $9.00 an hour to search. They say they make calls every 15 minutesbut often you wait a lot longer.(you look at indexes and then fill out a slip for the book to actually look at the record. Hours are 9-12 and 2-4 They cannot be looked up at the NARA in Waltham

Now you can find those old Jails, Orphan Houses, etc. (if you know the streets to look for). I found my ancestor's farm and who his neighbors were. Very exciting!!! Happy digging! Susan

Try: http://library.uml.edu/clh/GenRes.Html and scroll down for Lowell Vital Records. I looked for her in the 1899 and 1915 Lowell City Directory, but did not find her. There was a Mrs. Jennie Hobart running a boarding house at 153 Appleton in the 1899 one. Could that have been her? I think so because I just found this record: Hobart Jennie M. (Curry) Lowell 1909 vol 58pg 112 Death Now that I found that, I went back to the first link I gave you and found: Hobart, Jennie M. 6 Aug. 1909 68 years old You could probably contact the Lowell Pollard Memorial Library and request the librarians search for an obituary, if you need one. It would cost about $6 plus copies. http://www.pollardml.org/localhis.html#ask Hope this helps, Susan

Liza's marriage info: Record 62 Married in Lawrence on Feb. 4, 1895 Joseph Vachron, age 21 Liza Simard, age 23 Both residing in Lawrence Joseph's occupation: Carder Liza's occupation: Operative Joseph born in Bangor, Me. Liza born in Canada Joseph's parents were John and Masie Liza's parents were Jhessy and Rena [in that order: father, mother] First marraige for each Married by Rev. J. M. Postal, Lawrence You could probably contact the Lawrence City Clerk for information on the other two (asking nicely!) since you know the year now. Or just wait a few weeks and repost your question. By then they may be available online and I (or others) can look them up. I did also look up deaths, just in case, but there was just one boy, 4, son of Joseph. Susan

    1. Middlesex VR transcriptions
    2. John Slaughter
    3. Good morning, everyone. :-) This is a note to let those of you who don't know about a large project that has been going on for some time - the transcription of the early vital records of MA to the end of 1849. The are the published books commonly referred to as the "Tan Books." I had been concentrating on Essex county. Recently a lady wanted to do Lowell and I went ahead with that. So, the Lowell VRs are slowly going online. They are at http://www.rootsweb.com/~maessex/VitalRecords/MiddlesexCounty/Lowell/index.html The long term goal of this project is to get all of the books transcribed and online in one place in one common format. In addition to the transcriptions, I'll put the images online. The transcriptions are primarily a research aide. The images from the books are for documentation. In many cases, these are the only records that still exist. An additional step will be indexing the records by surname and given name. The main page for the vital records is http://www.rootsweb.com/~maessex/VitalRecords/index.html John Slaughter In loving memory of our son, Brennan. 11/10/88-5/31/01. http://john-slaughter.rootsweb.com/Brennan.html MA-Bay-Colony list moderator USGenWeb County Coordinator Essex County, MA - http://www.rootsweb.com/~maessex USGenWeb Town Coordinator Ipswich, Essex, MA - http://www.rootsweb.com/~macipswi _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! 1. "Pioneers of Billerica" (1600's) (new book)
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I hope this is allowed on this List. This morning I was looking for information from the web site for the "Billerica Historical Society," and, while I didn't find what I was looking for, I did find a page mentioning a new book which has been recently published: http://www.billericahistorical.org/ "The Pioneers of Billerica: Settling the Shawshine Wilderness, 1654-1660." I'll have to go to the Library and see if they have a copy which I can look at ! I am hoping my KIDDER ancestor is one of the "pioneers" mentioned. And, the description says that my CROSBY ancestor is mentioned. (My other ancestors in the area; e.g, PARKER and CHAMBERLAIN, were moreso residents of 1600's Chelmsford.) Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. What I was looking for was a web site for the "Howe Alumni" organization. I believe an organization was started within the last 12 years for the graduates for the former "Howe High School" in Billerica ! But, I couldn't find "any" on-line mention of it ! I did find this web site: http://static.namesdatabase.com/schools/MA/Billerica/HoweHighSchool.html For those of you with an interest in Billerica, there are probably 20 or 30 current "senior citizens" living in Billerica .. who grew up in Billerica ! Perhaps there are many more whom I don't know about !

    1. "Lowell Jail"
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I have some new information about where the original "Lowell Jail" would have been. I had an idea about it when it was being discussed over the weekend, but I didn't know whether I was remembering correctly. When I drove through Lowell today, I drove down Fletcher St. and found out I was correct. There are 3 old (slate/rock/granite constructed) buildings on Fletcher St. between Dutton St. and Cushing St. The larger one is the site of the long-standing "McKittrick's Hardware Store." There is a smaller building attached to it, but I couldn't tell whether it was used by the hardware store or some other business was using it or whether it is vacant. The other small building is on the other side of Cushing St. and is very similar to the other small one. Any of these 3 buildings could have held a "jailhouse" in the 1800's ! (One thing which confused me is I didn't remember Cushing St., and that is because I found out today it does not come through onto Fletcher St. as it is now designed. And, it looks like that building on the other side of Cushing St. is currently being totally "emptied" - hopefully to be rehabbed.) Betty (near Lowell, MA)

    3. Notre Dame de Lourdes is correct....the parish then moved to Smith Street. This was my parish. It is sad to say that the church closed down about two years ago as part of the Archdiocese' reconfiguration. I believe the grammar school Betty is talking about is the Franco-American on the corner of Pawtucket and School Street. I do know at one time it was an orphanage. I emailed them at one time to find out what happened to the records of the orphans that were there and they said that they still have the records there at the school. Their website is http://ecommunity.uml.edu/fas/. You can email them for more information pertaining to the orphanage.
