Records added to VA's online gravesite locator, Last year,VA furnished nearly 369,000 inscribed headstones and markers http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov The burial locations of more than 5 million veterans for whom the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has provided grave markers are now available on the Internet, as well as the information inscribed on the markers. Online since April 2004, the nationwide gravesite locator (http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov ) helps veterans' families, former comrades in-arms and others find the graves of veterans. VA recently added 1.9 million records for veterans buried primarily in private cemeteries to its database. The gravesite locator previously carried records on 3 million veterans buried in VA national cemeteries since the Civil War, and in state veterans cemeteries and Arlington National Cemetery since 1999. "The expansion of this innovative program continues VA's commitment to using Internet technology to fulfill the important mission of memorializing our nation's veterans,"said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs."By adding records to our online database,VA also helps families research their genealogy and ensures that future generations of Americans will be able to honor these veterans for their service." The new records date from January 1997, the earliest time for which electronic records exist. The information comes from applications made for these veterans' headstones or markers. Beyond the 5 million records now available,VA continues to add approximately 1,000 new records to the database each day. Last year,VA furnished nearly 369,000 inscribed headstones and markers. Internet users only need to provide the last name of the deceased veteran or dependent.Typically, the information available includes name, birth and death dates, rank, branch of service and the address and phone number of the cemetery. Veterans whose discharges are other than dishonorable, their spouses and dependent children may be buried in a national cemetery, regardless of where they live. No advance reservations are made.VA provides perpetual care, as well as a headstone or marker, a burial flag and a memorial certificate to survivors. Information on VA burial benefits can be obtained from national cemetery offices, from a VA Web site at www.cem.va.gov or by calling toll-free at (800) 827-1000. ----------------------------------- Thought this might be of value to some of you on the various genealogy lists............ Hello, Earlier this week I visited a member of the Billerica Historical Society who has an office at the "Faulkner House" in Billerica. He had told me about a very antique book he found in the house and this week I got to look at it. It was written by a Joshua KIDDER and was published in ..1795 .. ! We both became curious who this "poet" was, and I took on the challenge this morning. I found out he came from a long line of Ephraim KIDDER's in this area: Joshua KIDDER was born in 1768 in Billerica. The "KIDDER book" says that he married Mary WILSON in March 1808, and then died in Oct. 1808. And, no record of children was found ! (As I typed this, I noticed they were only married for 7 months ! They "might" have had a child, but - maybe not !) Mary WILSON was said to have been born in 1766 and was the daughter of Leonard WILSON and Rachel DURANT. I checked the Billerica book, and it states: Leonard WILSON was the son of John (3), and was born in 1736. In 1761 he married Rachel DURRANT, daughter of Abraham (5). Their children were: Abraham, b1762, Joseph, b1763, Isaac, b1764, Molly, b1766 (who m. Joshua KIDDER), and Reuben, b1768. Abraham DURRANT was the son of John (2), and was born in 1709. In 1736 he married Rachel MANNING, daughter of William (4). Their children were: Abraham, b1737, Jonathan, b1739, Martha, b1741, Rachel, b1743, Joseph, b1744, Reuben, b1747/8, Jonas, b1751, Asa, b1753, and Sarah, b1757. The KIDDER book then says that Joshua KIDDER, "yeoman" was a cooper and resided in Billerica. He bequethed to his wife his entire estate, and he is buried in the "South Cemetery" - with a poetical epitaph on his tombstone. Since Joshua was only 40 years old when he died, his wife, Mrs. Mary / Molly KIDDER, would have been only 42. Does anyone know if this Mrs. KIDDER married again? Does anyone know if she lived a long life? We don't have a date of death for her ! Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Hello, When I looked at the web site for the Billerica Historical Society this week, I happened to notice that they are now offering free maps of the historic homes which currently exist in town ! I visited a member of the Historical Society the next day, who has his business office in the historic "Faulkner House" in the Center.* And, he gave me a copy of the map. There are 93 houses, buildings, and places mentioned, but I thought I'd just list the places which have a surname attached to them: BROWN, BALDWIN, SHELDON, UNDERHILL, ALLEN, ROGERS, HILL, FARMER, FOSTER, LOCKE, DANFORTH, HOWE, POLLARD, PRESTON, BOWERS, POLLARD, MANNING, KOHLRAUSCH, BENNETT, SEXTON, SHEDD, MITCHELL, JAQUITH, STOKER, GORHAM, STEARNS, BRIDGE, FAULKNER, RICHARDSON, GRAY, WYMAN, DUTTON, TALBOT, CLARK, SPAULDING, RUGGLES, PARKER, KIDDER, PATTEN, KNOWLES, BLANCHARD In some cases, there are several homes for the same family. In the cases of "inns or taverns," sometimes the buildings are known by different names than they were in past centuries. For instance, I am wondering if what is listed here as "The Tavern at the Corner," was originally "the RICHARDSON Tavern" at "the Corner." FYI: Originally, way back when, people wanted "the Corner" to be -- Billerica Center -- but the people living "at the top of the hill" won the debate ! Some of the houses go back to the 1700's. But, while driving around different towns, I've noticed that many more "1700's houses" exist in Carlisle and Chelmsford - than in Billerica. The most well known in Billerica is the "MANNING Manse" built in 1696. It's near the Chelmsford line on Rt. 129 and I've noticed possibly 2 other MANNING homes on the same road but in Chelmsford. Also, please remember that during the 1720's, several towns annexed off of Billerica, so some of the very early homes in Billerica - would now be situated in Bedford, Carlisle, and Tewksbury, etc. One other name which appears on this map is NUTTING. And, the Town Historian might disagree with me, but I don't think a NUTTING ever lived in Billerica. But, yet, the good-size "Nutting's Lake" exists. My "guess" is that Mr. NUTTING lived just down the "Middlesex Turnpike" from the lake (in then Woburn) and might have spent a lot of time there ! (Not mentioned on the map is the small "WINNING's Pond.") This is the web site for the Billerica Historical Society. If you wish a copy of the map sent to you, you might want to send them a note with a SASE enclosed - but a 9x12 manila envelope - with possibly 2 stamps on it. http://www.billericahistorical.org/ The web site for the Billerica Library also has some historical data on it - see "Local History."
