Hello I would like some kind person to look up a surname for me. RONAN (ROMAN) several other spellings. Would like to know if there is / are anyone who was buried in Billerica, Lowell or Lawrence, MA say between 1900 to 1940 (hope that this is not too much of a spread. Also would someone have access to a City Directory for 1932 to say 1940 I am looking for a listing for a restaurant on the southwest corner of Front St. and Allegheny Ave. Joseph J. (E.) RONAN was supposed to have lived there. DO NOT know if it was Billerica, Lowell or Lawrence, MA or Boston for that matter. If this is too much to ask for in one email I am sorry, just have no resource to start from. Thank You in advance to whomever is able to help me. Most Sincerely Peggy Ledrich in OH
Maybe it is our bad accent.....but I hardly ever hear anyone pronounce the e in Billerica. So....BILLRICA is fine with us !! Not even the newscasters, known for eliminating any type of regional accent no matter where they come from....they do not even pronounce it with the e. :-) Jodi Andover MA USGenWeb Town Coordinator _www.rootsweb.com/~macandov_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~macandov/index.htm) Marblehead MA USGenWeb Town Coordinator _www.rootsweb.com/~macmarbl_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~macmarbl/) Tewksbury (State) Hospital Cemetery Project _http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tewksburyhospital/cemeterywelcome.ht ml_ (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tewksburyhospital/cemeterywelcome.html)
Hello I have been on this list / digest for a while now and was wondering if someone could tell me how is the name of Billerica pronounced??? I am a phonetic speller but this one I think is different than this OHIO gal knows. I do know from a friend that Worcester is pronounced (Wuster), but the other town I cannot ask her about. Thank you for you patience and assistance!!! Peggy in OHIO

I usually pronounce names the way they are spelled. That goes for Worcester, and Gloucester. I figure that if folks want it pronounced differently, they can change the spelling. I can live with changes in the language over time, like silent e's, and silent gh, but "Worcester" = "Wooster" is just too ridiculous. Even "ketchup" has changed its spelling from teh hopelessly outdated "catsup", and that's a far less important word. Though it is used more often, and I can see thousands of impatient people refusing to write "catsup" for ketchup. Is this a product of the whole word method of teaching reading in schools? If Billerica isn't bill - er- ee'- kah or bill -er -eek' @ (where @ is some sort of universal symbol for the scwa), that's still how I'm saying it! I can't imagine how good old fashioned solid feet on their ground New England stock, of which I am one, could possibly go along with Gloucester - Glooster and Worcester - Wooster. When did it get to be Glooster anyhow. When I was a kid, it was Foster from Gloster! Anyhow, it isn't a stupid question. Gloucester = Glooster could reasonably have people asking if bat is still pronounced bat. I'm trying to trace my maternal line in order to make sense of my eventual mitochondrial DNA from the Genographic Project. I am trying to pin down the roots of Anne Collins who was married to Thomas King, maybe on 25 Apr 1608/ 1609 in St. Dunston, Stepney, London, maybe on unkown date in Dunston, Dorset, England; maybe not in Dunston at all. Her husband was allegedly born in Dorset, possibly in Shaftsbury in 1599. Ann may possibly have been born Anne Collins, was born February 22, 1627-8 in Shaftesbury, Dorset, England. Anne's parents were allegedly Henry Collins and Maude Whittacker - who one web page alone, which gives no sources and no e-mail address to contact the owner of the web site, says one record identified her as Ann Sufleffe. We do not know WHAT record, nor where he found it. Does anyone have any specific information at all on Anne Collins' origins? Wondering if anyone could look up births prior to 1866 for RONAN children born to James and Bridgit Ronan. I have a copy of the 1866-70 index. Specifically looking for James RONAN in Billerica Dec. 1864 Elizabeth C. RONAN, about 1863, whose death cert lists Billerica as birthplace, but Town of Billerica does not have her. Michael H RONAN, about 1866, location unknown I already have info for the following children: John F Ronan born 1855 in Dedham Mary Ann born 1857 in Dedham Thomas born 1857 in Lawrence As you can see, they were all over Mass. Carroll, Using the NEHGS Massachusetts 1841-1910 VR database I find these: 14 Dec, 1864, James RONAN, m. b. Billerica ,s. James Ronan, spinner, b. Ireland, no name or birthplace of mother. Recorded Vol: 169 ; Page: 94. This record is indexed under the name Roman but is very clearly Ronan. Penmanship on this page was beautiful. Unable to find Elizabeth. 22 Apr, 1867, Michael RANAN, m. b. Haverhill, s. James & Bridget, spinner, both b. Ireland. Residence given as Haverhill. Recorded Vol: 196 ; Page: 193. Very clearly spelled Ranan in the book.
