Betty, I also remember that 'Lechmere Sales' only sold to certain Company employees who had a card to allow them access. I believe that it had to be a 'Union' card. That changed after a little while and everyone was welcome. I do miss that store. Transcriptions are moving along quite nicely. Now, I'd like thoughts on transcribing books that follow a different format - chronological. Boston in Suffolk, and Weston & Watertown in Middlesex are some of these. I have someone who'd like to transcribe Watertown. As Lowell is coming along very nicely, why not? :-) Watertown has a lot of other information besides the births, marriages and deaths. That can be done later. The main thing are the B, M, & D. I'd like people to take a look at how these are done and see about what to do. BTW, none of these 3 towns is on the NEHGS site, so beginning to work on them would be beneficial to many people. I don't know about Ancestry.com or Genealogy.com or FamilySearch.org. Pages 1 to 10 are at http://www.rootsweb.com/~maessex/VitalRecords/MiddlesexCounty/Watertown/Images/ There does not seem to be any page 2 or 3. This is my idea -- The transciber will transcribe the entry in the same format that most of us are familiar with for Essex county - what I already have online. I'll write a program that will put it in the common format with each line having the volume & page number with a link to the image. As an example, the first enty in Watertown is: 1636. John Pickaram the hufband of Efter Pickaram buried the 10th day of the tenth month: ageed Fifty yeares. The transcription would be: PICKARAM John, h. Ester, bur. 10: 10 m: 1636, a. 50 y. (Vol. 1, p. 1) The transcriptions are a research tool. They should make it easier for the researcher to locate the records that still exist. My opinion is: As long as the transcription gets the the researcher to the records, it has done its job. Changing the format is acceptable as long as the accuracy of the content is maintained. It is and always will be the responsibility of the researcher to obtain the best documentation possible. Don't know if any of this will help any of you, but--My mothers sister married John Henry Lynch of Newburyport. MA His parents were Jeremiah Lynch, and Julia Murphy(both born in Ireland). They had several children(not in order they were) Jeremiah, Humphrey, Daniela, John(my uncle) Catherine, Hannah, and Julia. My notes are somewhere, so I don't have dates handy, but if any of you think there could be a connection, e-mail me privately and I will try to answer more specific questions. Good Luck. I know its like looking for a needle in ha haystack with such common names. You might want to browse the genealogy.com and rootsweb message boards (Murphy/Lynch/MA etc) Just a suggestion. Barbara
Just an FYI - this was my response from the Arlington Library: We would be happy to do obituary research for you. The cost would be a $5.00 donation per search. We also require your requests in writing via regular mail. There currently is a backlog, and it might be several weeks before this research could be undertaken. All checks should be issued to: Robbins Library Please send research correspondence to: Robbins Library Adult Services 700 Massachusetts Ave. Arlington, MA 02476 Attention: Local History Thank-you. I am looking for information about Thomas Caulfield and Elizabeth Walker. All I know that they have daughter named Catherine who was born in Boston in 1901 and died in 1976 in Wilmington. She was married to Walter Vincent Strow. Also, I was told that Elizabeth was born in Nova Scotia. I would like to find more info about Thomas and Elizabeth Caulfield.
Hello, I thought I'd let you know about for lack of a better term, "a thought process" I went through this week: First of all someone got me thinking of a KIDDER born in Cambridge in 1721 who seems to have moved to Nova Scotia ~1750 ! I had done a mini-research on the family a few years ago and found out that he married (probably) a Mary BAKER in N.S. in 1758. I tried to find more information on the BAKER men / families who also arrived in Nova Scotia early on, and found an old posting in the archives of the N.S. List on the "Banishment Act of Massachusetts." Of the list of men "banished from MA," there was a BAKER. I posted a query on the N.S. List, and someone e-mailed to tell me about the LECHMERE man on the List. Since I grew up in Winchester and Arlington, of course, I knew about "Lechmere Square" in Cambridge. I figured it was named after someone, but had never investigated who it might have been ! The person who had e-mailed me mentioned that there were LECHMERE men in the 1700's in MA ! (There was a hint that there might have been a LECHMERE in the 1600's, but I couldn't find any information !) Some on-line investigating shows that "East Cambridge" used to be "LECHMERE's Point" (aka "PHIP's Farm"). And, important events took place there in the 1770's ! And, I'm told the "Richard LECHMERE house" still stands in Harvard Square. When I did more Googling for information on "Lechmere, Cambridge," I came across a newspaper article about the long-running store in Lechmere Square, which was named "Lechmere Sales." As with so many other people my age and older, I used to shop at Lechmere Sales, but I never thought too much about "who" started the business. The article I found said it was begun by a COHEN family ! * Next I found a web site offering a history of the NECCO Company. In the "history timeline" of candy-making in the U.S., you can read that "conversation candies" are now ..140 years old ! On that note, I hope everyone is enjoying their ... Valentine's Day ! Betty (near Lowell, MA) *I can also offer a little story from my childhood ! When my father came home after fighting in WW II, one of his first jobs was to work for a small "appliance sales & service" store in Cambridge. Probably in the 1940's, "Lechmere Sales," I'm told, was on one side of First St. (or was it Second St.?), and "WALCOTT Sales" was on the other side. At some point, Lechmere Sales decided to expand and become a much bigger store. Mr. WALCOTT decided to stay small, eventually moving his business to Somerville. Lechmere Sales much later got bought out by Montgomery-Ward, and in 1997, they both went out of business. The small Walcott Sales store .. is still in business ! The Walcott family used to have a "summer camp" on the Concord River in Billerica, and my siblings and I used to swim there ! Oh for the time in generations to come .. when the River will become "swimmable" again ! P.S. Reading up on the history of Nova Scotia - as it existed before 1784, you will see that families who settled there around 1750 were only just beginning the immigration to that "14th Colony" ... They went there some 20 years before the Loyalists, etc. went to live there ! (See recent postings on the Nova Scotia List !)

I have a Mary Burt in my tree, but she was married to Jonathan Farnsworth. I'm going to research this further, and see what I can come up with. I have Sawyers in my tree as well, but no Olivers. Feel free to email me and I will see what I can find. Do you know what Simeon's parents names are? Vanessa
