Hello, The RICE surname doesn't come up on the Lists too often, so I thought I would remind researchers that there is a "RICE Family Association." It is about the patriarch, (Deacon) Edmund RICE, of 1600's Sudbury ! http://www.edmund-rice.org/ Even though my great-great-grandfather, Charles Wellington RICE, was born in 1850 in Lubec, Maine, he is a "Deacon Edmund RICE" descendant ! I cannot quote "his line" from memory, but I can mention Jesse RICE of Marlborough, MA, and one of his sons, Ashabel RICE, who fought in the Revolutionary War ! After the War, Ashabel and Percissa (KNIGHT) RICE moved to "Maine", then over to Nova Scotia for a few years, and then back to "Maine." Their youngest son, Daniel V. RICE, was born in ~1803 in Maine, probably just after the large family returned there ! The majority of the family remained in the Lubec, ME, area. Daniel married Lucy McDANIEL or McDONALD who had been born in New Brunswick ~1811, and they had 10 children. Charles was their youngest, born in 1850. I believe that most of Charles' brothers remained in Washington County, Maine. But, I have had trouble finding the marriage information of the 4 sisters. But two things happened during the past week ! I received a photo of a gravestone from the cemetery in Medford - showing that Charles Wellington RICE was buried in a McNEAR / MacNEAR family plot ! A little investigating showed that Mrs. Amelia McNEAR was his sister ! Just this morning I heard that Amelia RICE and Charles McNEAR (both from Maine) married in Boston in 1870 ! So, I'm wondering if Amelia came down to Boston in the late 1860's, and brought her youngest brother down to Boston with her ! Also, someone reminded me of the 1850 census for Lubec, and I noticed that Amelia's twin sister, Emily, is not shown. So, she probably did not survive childhood ! (Note: that census showed Amelia at Age 10 (I think born in 1840), and yet the marriage record states she was 25 !) .... I have never joined the RICE Family Association, but I have contributed information on my line of RICE men to their large, extensive "data base." I understand it is quite an active organization, with several "local" people who act as officers ! And, I believe they have an "annual meeting" in MA ! Hope this helps someone ! Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. I forgot to mention that my great-great-grandparents, Charles and Adelaide (HUTCHINSON) RICE, had two daughters: Louise Wellington RICE and Edith Crosby RICE. They were born in Winchester in the 1870's, and then Charles and Adelaide "separated" probably during the 1890's (or by 1900). Charles Wellington RICE was somehow connected to a person or a family in Ashland, MA, as he seems to have spent time there, and died there in 1916 ! (Still a mystery !) But, he was buried with his sister's family in Medford ! Edith RICE was a life-long Children's Librarian in Arlington. During the mid-1900's, a large, important collection of children's books was donated to the University of Maine. And, the wealthy donor named it "The Edith C. RICE Collection" - after her long-time friend ! Louise RICE (and Edith) were probably visiting their RICE relatives in Lubec and Eastport, ME, when Louise "Lou" met George "Sanford" KIDDER from Princeton, Maine. They married there in 1898, but came back down to Winchester, MA, to live ! Unfortunately, "Sanford" ran into "problems," and around the time of his father's death in Princeton, Maine, he decided to move back there - basically abandoning his wife and 3 school-age children (1915 to 1920 timeframe). Mrs. Louise KIDDER inherited one of the HUTCHINSON Farms from her mother's cousins around 1930, but she had a great deal of trouble maintaining the very large property ! Her disabled son and his wife had to give it up in 1958 ! The matching "HUTCHINSON Farm" still exists, but most of the land has been sold off .. for the building of new houses ! 1. WELLINGTON, HOMER in Cambridge, Arlington, Belmont, etc.
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I believe I made a statement a day or two ago which I need to retract. It is in regards to the WELLINGTON surname ! My great-great-grandfather was born Charles Wellington RICE in 1850 in Lubec, Maine. And, my "guess" is that he was given his middle name because of the "Duke of Wellington." And, I had made a statement that my sister thought we had a WELLINGTON on our family tree, and I doubted it. But, while going through boxes of genealogy papers last night looking for something, I was reminded of some VERY OLD papers I had borrowed from my sister several years ago! One of them is a very small book, entitled: "A few facts concerning Roger WELLINGTON and some of his descendants" "To my Dear Nieces and Nephews: I have gathered these few pages of records and reminiscences in the hope that they may foster in you a love for your ancestors. A. W. GRISWOLD, Belmont, July 1892." It really should be called a booklet as it is only 26 pages, and yet it is an official, hard-cover book. This copy of the book has many hand-written notes in it, and has a few obituaries / death notices taped to the inside cover. One of them is from the "Arlington Advocate" from Feb. 1903: HORACE H. HOMER "The entire community was surprised and deeply pained on Wednesday to lear of the death of Mr. H. H. Homer, which occurred at 3:30 that morning, at his late residence on the GRAY estate, one of the oldest landmarks on Pleasant Street. Although the deceased has been ill for nearly a year and confined to the house most of the time since last August, with what was first called Sciatica ..... Mr. Homer was the third son of William F. and Adeline (Wellington) Homer, of Belmont, who resided in the house just opposite Town Hall in that town. ...." Handwritten on the inside cover is: 1892 - From Mrs. Adaline Wellington (Homer) Griswold of Concord Avenue in Belmont, widow of Charles .... (Mrs. Griswald was born in Boston in 1832.) I can't offer how the HOMER name enters our family-tree at this moment; I would need to refer to my sister's notes. But, it most definitely would be in the extended family-tree of our great-grandmother, Louise Wellington (RICE) KIDDER, who was born in Winchester in 1876. Her father, Charles Wellington RICE was born in 1850 in Lubec, ME, and he came down to Boston and met and married Adelaide Crosby HUTCHINSON of Winchester, MA. Adelaide came from two important families: the HUTCHINSON's of 1800's Winchester, and the CROSBY's of 1800's Arlington (West Cambridge). And, many "Arlington surnames" are on that combined family-tree ! This book starts out: ".... Roger Wellington, the founder of his family in America, was born in England about 1609. He came to this country in 1630 and in 1636 bought fourteen acres of land on the border of Watertown and Cambridge, now called Belmont. Here he settled, and at about the same time married Mary, eldest daughter of Dr. Richard Palgrave of Charlestown who is mentioned in books of that time as "a right godly man and skillfull surgeon.' ...." That's all I can offer today ! But, I would like to make a comment or two: Wouldn't it be nice if in the days we live in today -- we could take a part of our family tree - or all of it - and have an official "book publisher" be willing to publish our family-tree book or booklet ! Also, our family was somewhat lucky ! Some of our ancestors (or members of their family) took a strong interest in "their roots." And, I believe it was Edith Crosby RICE, b1878 Winchester, who had two passions ! She was a life-long Children's Librarian in Arlington ! And, she spent many years researching her family-tree, concentrating a lot on the HUTCHINSON's of Charlestown and then Winchester ! And, my sister started her part of the research because of an "antique photo album" retrieved from one of the "HUTCHINSON Farms" in Winchester before it was sold in 1958 ! (It's the rest of our family-tree -- which has "many" brick-walls ! Or, solidly built, concrete-block walls, put together with reinforced cement !) :o) Betty (near Lowell, MA)

    3. I looked up the Vital records of Cambridge, Massachusetts, to the year 1850 Boston, Mass.: unknown, 1914-1915, 1742 pgs. and there were lots of Teels, just not for your couple. The father/couples are: Gershom George and Rebecca Ammi C. and Sarah Levi and Lydia Amos and Hannah Jonathan W and Emmeline I also checked the Vital records of Arlington, Massachusetts to the year 1850 Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1904, 162 pgs. There are only two Teels listed in the births: Georgianna Russell, d. Joseph and Mary, Apr 6, 1845 Thomas, s. Tho[ma]s H., July 30, 1815. Looks like an older brother; sorry no others are listed. Did the family move to another town after Thomas was born? 3. Hi again, I e-mailed the Reference Dept. at the Medford Library, and just received a response: Hello- the director forwarded me you question about Wellington Circle. The Wellington area of Medford is named after two brothers - James and Isaac Wellington, who bought large tracts of farmland in that area in 1819. They were very influential, and at one point donated land to the Boston and Maine railroad on the condition that all Medford trains should stop at Wellington. They began to divide up the farmland and sell house lots in that area in the 1850's. In 1874, when the Wellington Bridge and a new road to Boston were built the area developed very quickly. If you'd like any more info, we have a great book that is the scrapbook for the Wellington Improvement Association which has lots of information and pictures. 3. Jacki, Bad news, can not find his birth record at NEHGS or in the published VRs to 1850. I checked both Middlesex and Suffolk counties, just to see if it was recorded in Boston. The NEHGS had 2 marriages for him: 1. March 6, 1853, Albert L. Teel, res. West Cambridge, a. 28 y., housewright, b. West Cambridge, s. Thomas Teel, 1st marriage Susan Floyd, res. 1. NEHGS lookup: The JASON RUSSELL ancestry of GEORGE TEEL, b. Arlington Apr 9 1854
    2. A mystery. KENNETH WILSON e-mailed me the following: In an Arlington Advocate article dated September 10, 1936, it gives the obituary of George E. Teel, whose wife was Emily Ann Russell. It states there that he was a great-great grandson of Jason Russell. His father we know was Albert Teel, but nowhere in my records can I find any descendant Of Jason by that name. What can you tell me? GEORGE TEEL, born April 9, 1854, son of Albert Teel, in Arlington where he lived all his life ============================================ http://searsr.com/richard1/pafg174.htm 9543 M i Walter Harvey Sears was born 12 Jun 1881 in Newton Centre, MA. was buried in , 4056ai. Walter married Edith Russell Teel, daughter of George A Teel, on 20 Sep 1905 in Arlington, MA. Edith was born 1884 in . ============================== There is a TEEL Street in Arlington, MA ================================== http://www.arlingtonhistorical.org/house/archhistory.php Through the settling of the estates and through sale, Jason Russell's original farm had been reduced in size. In 1883 Lydia Teel divided the remaining land, "Jason Russell's orchard" as she called it, among her children, giving the old house to her son Thomas Russell Teel. She also had a road laid out in front of the house, and this was accepted by the town as Jason Street in 1884. Mrs. Teel died in 1886 Russell Teel tore down the old barn and further altered Jason Russell's original ell. Part of it was used for a while as a smokehouse. At his death, in 1896, the house passed out of the family, and a subsequent owner moved it partly off its original foundations to install a furnace. The original chimney was lost in the process of moving and part of the 1863 ell, but otherwise the house was retained intact. In 1923 this and several other houses in Arlington were endangered by demolition threats, and the Arlington Historical Society wisely chose to purchase and save Jason Russell's house over the less preserved of the threatened houses. ============================================= closest in my FTM CD#220 MA VITAL RECORDS TEEL, ALBERT T.
