No one claimed my father's 'death benefit'. He is not listed on the SSDI. When I contacted Social Security they indicated that there is a time period of two years during which the death benefit may be claimed. There was nothing I could do to get his name on the SSDI which is not based totally on whether or not the death benefit was claimed... Anyway, I was beyond the time limit for collecting the benefit (having called many years after his death). As the family branched out some came to Mass. If you think you may have a connection to the above would love to hear from you. Sandi (McGlashing) McIntyre
Hello, I'd like to add more to my posting this week about the 13 LEWIS siblings who grew up in Stoneham, MA ! The oldest was William S. LEWIS who was born in Nova Scotia before his parents moved down to MA and had 12 more children here ! I knew he was born in early 1880, and the family migrated in 1881. Through census information I had found a William and Jennie LEWIS living the Everett area, and William had very similar information to my William so I "thought" he might have been my "William." This couple "retired to" Plymouth, ME, which is near Bangor. This week I put out a query on a Maine List, and someone was able to find the obituary of that William. As it turns out, it was the wrong William ! But, it is quite surprising how many similarities there were between the two William's ! The ME obituary said that that William was born on Feb. 29th, 1880 in New Brunswick. I knew that my William had been born in Nova Scotia around the same time. So, last night I dug through my notes and found his birthdate - Feb. 29th, 1880 ! The obituary said that William H. LEWIS had gone to school in both Saint John, NB, and Stoneham, MA. The parents of my William S. LEWIS came down to Boston and not long after settled in Stoneham, MA ! So, I am now wondering if these two William LEWIS' went to high school together ! :o) So that others can be helped, the William Henry LEWIS had the parents, William H. LEWIS and Annebelle WARNOCK. I checked the 1881 Canadian census for Saint John, and actually found the 2 families living in the same household ! Also, I found out that William LEWIS, b1880, married Jennie LORD who had been born in Maine ! And, in 1920 in MA, they had Mrs. Annie LORD, a widow, living with them. The obituary said they only had one son, William LEWIS, Jr., and he appears to have lived in Maine, also ! (Found out that Plymouth and Pittsfield, ME, are bordering towns, and this couple actually died in Newport, ME.) I found my correct couple, William and Laura (?) LEWIS, living in Lynn, MA, in 1920. They had a daughter, Mona LEWIS, 10, but I think Mona was William's daughter from a first marriage - perhaps to Mary EMERSON of Stoneham (?). Laura (?) was born in Canada, also, and immigrated in 1906. She was a saleslady in a grocery store. And, William was listed as a police officer for the "Steam Railroad" at that time. After all this, I remembered that my mother had told me she had attended "Uncle Will's" funeral. But, I have no idea whether that was in the 1940's or 1950's ! In this family, both of the parents died of cancer while in their early 60's (1923 and 1924). They lost a son when he was 26 of a heart-attack. My grandfather died in his early 60's of a heart-attack. His brother, John (youngest in family), died in his early 60's in CA of lung-cancer. They lost a married daughter in 1923 when she died during childbirth. I have not yet found out when the others died, except for a few who seem to have lived into their late 70's. As I mentioned, the married daughters had the surnames, GREENE, WING, JOYCE, PHELAN, TALMADGE, HUBER, and CHASE ! Thank you for your time! May "each" of us find "our Pot of Gold" today ! :o) Spiritually or physically ! Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. Most of my family-tree from the 1600's to the 1800's seem to have been "all English" -- but one of my grandfather's was descended from "Scottish surname" people who lived in IRELAND from the late 1700's - and went to Quebec Province in the 1820's ! So, even though my "uncles, aunts, and cousins" very much celebrate their "Scottish heritage" !!! Me, the genealogist, has seen several references to "those IRISH families" living in Quebec Province during the 1800's ! :o)
Hi Barbara, Thank you for the information. I also found out a couple of years ago that there was a CHASE family in Stoneham - where the LEWIS children grew up ! I believe the names of the 5 CHASE children were: Joseph, John, Dorothy, Helen, and June, but I'm not positive.. I don't know what years they were born, and I don't know their birth order. Hi John, If I know I'm going to use a "very busy" web site, I try to use it between 5 am and 7 am -- seems to be the least busy time of the day. I'm going to try using the LDS site now to see what happens ! I also had a problem getting the HeritageQuest site via my Library after I started using Norton, and I was told by ProQuest customer service that the only way for me to "get in" is to "disable" Norton for a few minutes ! And, that has worked fine ! I'm "very" aware of -- virus-type problems, and am always cautious ! Enjoy your day ! Hello, Since the LDS web site has been brought up, I'd like to ask if anyone else is having trouble with it. www.familysearch.org I didn't use the web site for a few weeks, and then, when I tried to use it, I found out we now have to "sign in." That wasn't a problem. But, almost every time I do a "search," I get the "your time has expired" message, and I have to start the "search" all over again ! Is this something which is happening to other people, or does it have something to do with my recently switching to "Norton" ?? I do "disable" Norton when I got to the site, but it doesn't seem to make a difference ! Thank you for your time ! Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Betty, It is extremely rare that I use FamilySearch.org. As a site that with extremely heavy traffic, it could be that you are simply timing out because of the heavy load. Do not EVER turn off your Norton, or any other virus/internet protection. You could wind up regretting it. It is sometimes necessary to turn off anti-virus software when installing new programs. Betty, I noticed your searching for a Chase family from Winchester. For what it may be worth I know of two Chase families that lived in Reading Ma in the 1950's. They each had a daughter(maybe other children too) that I went to school with. One of the girls was named Catherine(Kathleen etc). I'm afraid I have forgotten the other girls names. Just thought since Winchester in next to Reading, that it may be worth looking into. If anyone in area has access to old phone directories(1958-59 ). I think Catherine has since died, but not sure. Good Luck Betty. Barbara
