Folks- Do you have any advice on how to find contact information for Mary Ann and Eugene Mark of Winchester. They apparently have an unlisted number so I cannot access them from the online telephone directories. I believe Mary Ann is the daughter of Marie Lamey Wilson and Joseph Wilson, of San Francisco. Marie is one of 25 5th graders in a 1917 school photo I found at a flea market. I am looking for living relatives to share the photo with. Thanks for any help- Nancy

Hello, A POWERS researcher e-mailed this afternoon, and, while I was responding, I remembered that when Rev. Walter POWERS built his large home in 1711, it would have been in Chelmsford at the time ! Westford hadn't annexed off yet ! So, it appears that both Thomas KIDDER and Rev. Walter POWERS lived in the part of Chelmsford which annexed off to become Westford. Having said that, I saw the the current Samuel Fitch B&B is directly on the Littleton line, so I am now curious whether the border between Chelmford and Littleton changed at some time. While looking for information on the history of Littleton, I found this "brief history" on their web site: http://www.littletonma.org/General%20Info/history_of_littleton.htm It took me 15-20 minutes to find out when Littleton was incorporated as a town, but it was 1715 ! The various reasons why it was settled in the 1600's, but not incorporated until the 1700's is discussed on the above web site. This also means that, when Rev. POWERS built his large home, and probably had a large property, it would have either been in Chelmsford, or in the "Nashoba" settlement, or half and half ! ... Not only do genealogists also have to be historians, we also have to be geniuses, and very alert ! :o) Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. Thank you to Janice for posting the information from the Westford history about the KIDDER name ! Maybe it also mentions the POWERS name ! I'm going to borrow the history of Westford from the Library later this week !

Hello, I had recently asked a NH researcher if she would try to look for a Death Record in NH for a Carleton HUTCHINSON, b~1870 in Winchester, MA. He and his possibly 2 wives had lived in various MA towns, but I found out he was living in Littleton, NH, in 1920. But, I rechecked the SSDI listings, and I found out that a Carleton HUTCHINSON, b1870 MA, died in MA in 1962 ! So, I am now wondering if he came back down to live in Arlington or Winchester, MA, where he grew up ! His father was George HUTCHINSON of Winchester, MA, and George was the only sibling of my great-great-grandmother, Mrs. Adelaide Crosby (HUTCHINSON) RICE ! Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. My sister has gone through old papers and found out that the HUTCHINSON Farm at 21 Ridge St. in Winchester burned down in ..1883.. (corner of Ridge St. and Hutchinson Road). The owners, unmarried siblings, Thomas and Mary HUTCHINSON, were living nearby on High Street in 1900. And, I am wondering if they did not build a replacement house right away ! Their parents were Thomas HUTCHINSON and Mary MASTERS, and I was reminded that no one is probably researching them, as they did not have descendants.
Hello, I have a new interest in learning about the Rev. Walter POWERS who lived in Westford in the early 1700's. On a web site for the "Samuel FITCH Bed & Breakfast" in Westford, it says the home was originally built by the Rev. Walter POWERS in 1711. If I could find out how long the POWERS family lived in the home, I might be able to find out when Samuel FITCH purchased the large estate ! I am trying to find out whether Samuel and Joanna FITCH lived in "her" home on Texas Road in Westford when they married in 1732, or in "his" home on Powers Road in Westford ! Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. Joanna was the former Mrs. Joanna (KEYES) KIDDER, and she lived on "the large KIDDER estate" of her late husband, Thomas KIDDER, when she met Samuel FITCH who had moved to town from Bedford, MA.
Subject: Westford, MA at the Battle of Bunker Hill Source: History of the Town of Westford in the County of Middlesex, Massachusetts 1659 - 1883. by Rev. Edwin R. Hodgman, A. M. Lowell, Mass: Morning Mail Company, Printers - 1883 p.110 The Battle of Bunker Hill In this battle, as well as in the struggle at Concord Bridge, Colonel Robinson participated. He was then in Prescott's Regiment, which occupied the redoubt. A tall man, of commanding presence, he stood in the front, "in shape and gesture proudly eminent," exposed to instant death, yet doing his duty; now leaping upon the parapet, a target for the advancing foe, and now reconnoitering, with the ill fated McClary, the position of the enemy to find the best way of repelling his persistent attacks; showing himself everywhere the efficient officer and the strong-hearted man. In the list of companies in this battle, there is given one of which Joshua Parker was captain, Amaziah Fassett, first lieutenant, and Thomas Rogers, second lieutenant. Parker and Rogers were from Westford, and Fassett was born here, but was then a resident of Groton. Parker was a sergeant in Captain Underwood's Company, and Rogers held the same rank in Captain Bate's Company, at Concord Bridge. Fassett was taken prisoner at Bunker Hill and died in Boston July, 1775. The following is the muster-roll of Captain Parker's Company, including only the names of Westford men. They were in Col. William Prescott's Regiment: Captain Joshua Parker. Date of Enlistment 1775 April 12 Second Lieutenant, Thomas Rogers April 19 Sergeant, Solomon Spalding April 19 Sergeant, Nehemiah Green April 19 Sergeant, Silas Proctor April 19 Sergeant, Jonathan Minott April 19 Corporal, Peter Brown April 19 Corporal, Obadiah Perry April 20 Corporal, Levi Temple April 19 Corporal, Jonas Holden April 19 Drummer, Isaac Parker April 19 Fifer, Ephraim Spalding April 19 Calvin Blanchard April 19 David Bixby May 1 Abel Boynton May 5 William Chandler April 30 Samuel Craft April 19 Ephraim Dutton April 19 Benjamin Esterbrooks April 19 Levi Fletcher April 19 Josiah Fletcher April 19 Joshua Fassett April 19 Isaac Green April 19 Ephraim Heald April 19 Oliver Heald May 17 (p.112) Jonathan Hildreth April 19 David Keyes May 6 Samuel Keyes April 19 Thomas Kidder April 28 Peter Larkin April 26 John Parker April 19 John Pushee April 19 Nath'l Prentice May 2 William Read May 18 Oliver Read April 19 Stephen Read April 19 Francis Smith April 19 Silas Spalding April 19 Simeon Senter April 26 Joseph Underwood April 19 Robbin Skinner April 26 James Perry April 19 Jonas Blodgett April 19 Nath'l Holmes April 19 Perry, Blodgett and Holmes "enlisted into the artillery Company, May 24, 1775." Joseph Minott and Jonathan Hadley, both of Westford, were killed in battle June 17, 1775. Abijah Mason, also of Westford, died in camp July 30, 1775. This return of Captain Parker's Company, in the Tenth Regiment of Foot, commanded by Col. William Prescott, was made Sept. 27, 1775, and without doubt, Minott, Hadley, and Mason were members of it. The company of Capt Abijah Wyman, of Ashby, was in Col. William Prescott's regiment in that battle. The return, made Oct 3, 1775, includes the following men from Westford: Thomas Comings, Second Lieutenant; Daniel Dudley, Corporal; Philip Robbins, Corporal. Thomas Robbins Caesar Bason Oliver Barrett David Cowdry Ebenezer Corey Simeon Kemp David Fish Thaddeus Read Abner Kent Daniel Whitney Jeremiah Robbins In all 14 men. The return states that "Cesor Bason died June 17." (p.113) Mr. Francis Tinker in his sketch of Ashby, in Drake's History of Middlesex County, Vol. I, p. 223, says that Lieutenant Comings and ten men in Captain Wyman's company, were from Westford, but he does not give names. In regard to Caesar Bason, this anecdote is told on good authority. In the battle he found his powder was nearly gone and putting in his last charge, he exclaimed, "Now Caesar, give 'em one more." He fired and was himself shot, and fell back into the trench. Tradition intimates that Leonard Proctor went to Cambridge on the day before the battle and was on or near the ground. Mr. Tinker states that Jacob Bascom, of Westford, was killed. No such name occurs in our records, and there was probably a mistake in putting Bascom for Bason. Bason was a colored man and perhaps the servant of James Burn. There is some uncertainty as to his real name. In 1773 "Caesor Burn was paid 4 shillings for four crows killed in this town." Colonel Prescott, in a letter to John Adams, says: "I commanded my Lt. Col. Robinson and Maj. Woods, each with a detachment, to flank the enemy, who, I have reason to think, behaved with prudence and courage." It is stated that when the British were advancing some of the Provincials fired without orders, so eager were they for the fray. This made Colonel Prescott angry. "His Lt. Col. Robinson ran round the top of the parapet and threw up the muskets." (Colonel Swett's Narrative, p. 34.) Transcribed by Janice Farnsworth

He filled important civil offices, was land surveyor, Justice of the Peace, Captain and Colonel. He gave his attention to the cultivation of fruit and "previous to the Revolution, had one of the largest and most valuable orchids in New England, containing the rarest varieties of apples and pears." He was on intimate p.159 terms with Gov. Wentworth who in 1770 conferred on him the title of Colonel of a regiment of militia. From the Masonian proprietors he received a grant of a township of land, subsequently called Washington in New Hampshire. He assisted in the organization of the church in 1760 and was one of its orig. members. He had four sons and eight daughters, all of whom lived to adult age and some of them to be very old. He died in 1793 aged 70 yrs. His wife, Susanna Burge of Westford died in 1824 aged 88 yrs. Hello, I've been trying to learn how long KIDDER's remained living in Westford, and I was checking census information, and found that same problem that I found a week or so ago ! I found 3 different KIDDER's listed as living in Westford in the 1900 census in the Index at "HeritageQuest." But, when I checked the actual page, right across the top was written the "Town of Wilmington." Last week it was my HUTCHINSON family listed as living in Westford in 1900, and right across the top of the page was written "Town of Winchester." I don't know how this happened, but it seems the transcriber for the 1900 MA census .. couldn't get his or her "W ___ towns" correct ! Just wanted to alert researchers to always check the top of the actual census page to see what town the family "actually" lives in. ... By the way, so far, it seems that Thomas Kidder GREEN did not remain in Westford too long. (See other postings.) And, after 1800, I think KIDDER's had moved out of town. But, in the 1850's and 1860's there was a George KIDDER family there. But, by 1870, George isn't mentioned, and the James Otis KIDDER family is ! Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA)
Hello, In addition to my last postings, I just realized that I'd be interested in learning about the children of Lt. Samuel ADAMS and Sarah KIDDER in Chelmsford. "The KIDDER book" only has the list of their children and no further information: Sarah KIDDER married Samuel ADAMS in Concord in 1780. Their children were: Samuel ADAMS, b1781, Sally ADAMS, b1783, Mary ADAMS, b1785, John ADAMS, b1787 (d.1824), and Lucy ADAMS, b1793 (d.1808). I have not yet checked the archives of the Lists and Boards for this family, but will do that during the day. And, I will do further on-line checking. And, then I will check the "History of Chelmsford" to see what it says. As I said in my other postings, these ADAMS children in Chelmsford would have been the cousins to the 10 GREEN children in Carlisle ! (children of Zacheus GREEN and Elizabeth KIDDER) Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. Earlier this morning I thought I saw a reference to a "GREEN cemetery" in either Carlisle or Concord. If I have time, I will head over to Carlisle during the week !
Hello, Sorry for the last posting. I sent the mouse cursor up to click on "paste" and, instead, it headed up to the "send" box! :o( This is the page for the "Carlisle" web site where you can find a "brief history." http://www.carlisle.org/ For the moment, I would just like to ask whether anyone is researching the family of Zacheus and Elizabeth (KIDDER) GREEN of Carlisle, MA. I believe they had 10 children between 1765 and 1785. I am most interested in their oldest son, Thomas Kidder GREEN, b1768. I would like to know whether he married and had children. If he didn't, I'd like to know who "inherited" the "large KIDDER estate" in Westford upon his death ! Thank you for your time ! Betty (near Lowell, MA)
Hello, While looking for more information on the children of Zacheus GREEN and Elizabeth KIDDER who married in Westford in 1765, I came across this web site. It's a part of the Carlisle, MA, web site, which tells the names of the "meeting rooms" in the new Town Hall. One thing I noted is that the "historic home" across from their Library is considered "the GREEN home." I drive through Carlisle every now and then, but I don't know anything about their "historic homes." http://rootsweb.com/~maccarli/hallroom.htm This is one of the web sites about Carlisle. If you click on "About Carlisle," you will see the history of the town:

Hello, I've decided to start a mini-project to find out how long the "KIDDER family estate" which was in Westford from the beginning of the town remained in family hands. It was the home of Thomas and Joanna (KEYES) KIDDER. Thomas died the day before the town was annexed off of Chelmsford. Mrs. Joanna KIDDER remarried in 1732 to Samuel FITCH, so she must have remained living on the KIDDER estate for several years with her 5 young sons. I have not yet found out whether she and Samuel lived in "his" home or "her" home. Thomas and Joanna's oldest son, Thomas "Cornet" KIDDER, was said to have had "considerable property," and I would like to know if he lived on his parents' land ! "Cornet" or "Constable" KIDDER only had 2 daughters, so, when he died in 1793, the then "KIDDER estate" went to his oldest grandson, Thomas Kidder GREEN, b1768 Carlisle ! I think he was the oldest of 9 or 10 children of Zacheus and Elizabeth (KIDDER) GREEN. I don't have any further information on him, so I'd like to know if he married and had children! If he did, I'd like to know whether one of his children inherited the "KIDDER estate." And, if I knew how long he lived, I might be able to track down who inherited the property from him at his death ! Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) FYI: It seems that "the considerable property" of Thomas KIDDER (son of John KIDDER) might have remained intact from the 1700's to the mid-1900's. And, part of it "might" be part of the very large "EMMET Conservation Land" in Westford ! (I believe that the "large, ornate home" might have burned down in the late 1800's. And, some descendant or someone might have built a much smaller home on the property. But, the "possible" location of the original house doesn't seem to have a building on it at the present time.) (Texas Road in Westford)
