    2. THE NICKNAMES: The Bay State: Massachusetts is most commonly known as "The Bay State" or "The Old Bay State" in reference to the Cape Cod Bay where early settlements were made and to the Massachusetts Bay Company given a royal charter in 1629 to promote settlement of the new land "from sea to shining sea." The charter of the Massachusetts Bay Company was the foundation of a government for the Massachusetts Bay Colony. _http://www.netstate.com/states/intro/ma_intro_ (http://www.netstate.com/states/intro/ma_intro) .

I am going to send it to the group under the email address rhardebeck@aol because it is the only way I know how to attach it. That is the email on my Kodak program. If you can read the three words after Sudbury please let me know. It looks like "in yeBay State" to me but it does not make sense.

    1. Eleazer WHITE, apprentice to George HUTCHINSON (1660)
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I have thought of this in past years, but decided to try to find more information now ! I'm curious what happened to Eleazer WHITE, an apprentice to George HUTCHINSON of 1600's Charlestown, MA ! Eleazer is mentioned in the will of George in 1660 ! The information from "The Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown ..." has the following: "HUTCHINSON, George (1). Inhabitant 1630; adm. church, 1632, with wife, Margaret ______l d, Dec, 11m 1660. Issue: Nathaniel, bapt. .. 1633. .... Will: (10) pro. 18 (10) 1660, devised to wife 1/2 house; to son 1/2 house and time of apprenticeship Eleazer White; bro. John Penticost and Thomas Lynde, overseers. ...." I am guessing this means that, upon the death of George, Eleazer WHITE became the apprentice of George's (only) son, Nathaniel HUTCHINSON. Nathaniel and Sarah (BAKER) HUTCHINSON are discussed in the next paragraph. (They had 7 children born to them, they are my ancestors.) Nathaniel bought and sold many properties while he lived in Charlestown. I just checked through the "estate" and "inventory" and "division" (will?), and they don't mention Eleazer WHITE. ... If Eleazer was an apprentice of George HUTCHINSON's in 1660, and then continued to be an apprentice to Nathaniel, should I guess that Eleazer was born during the 1640's ? I checked the LDS site last night, and I think I found an Eleazer WHITE born in 1647 in Roxbury (saying this from memory), and no other information on him ! Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA)

    3. Hi Geoff, It was through that fraternal organization that my parents met ! The United Order of the Golden Cross !! They belonged to the George A. JOHNSON Chapter, which was based in Somerville, I believe, and they remained in the organization until it was fading out. At that time, it was taken over by the much larger fraternal organization, the Woodmen of the World !! And, even then my mother and her older sister remained active, but, when the dozen or so people were all around 80, they decided it was time to close the chapter. During the 1940's and 1950's, my family was very active in the very active Chapter. There were monthly meetings, and many activities, including an annual dinner / dance at a large Hall in Lynn, and an annual picnic at the State Park in Ashby / Townsend, and an annual Christmas party for the kids. I think it was around 1960 when things started fading down ! When I tried to find out more about the origin of the organization a few years ago, I'm pretty sure I found a web site listing the names of "all" fraternal organizations. And, I'm fairly sure I found a brief-description of the United Order of the Golden Cross on some web site. Later this morning I'll try to find those web sites again ! 1. Re: [MAMiddle] Carlisle, MA, 1700's / 1800's - The Blood Farms
    2. Subject: Robert BLOOD Source: History of Chelmsford, Mass. In 1652, certain inhabitants of Concord and Woburn asked the General Court to allow them to examine the region later granted them - six miles square and called Chelmsford. In 1656, an extension was granted of about three miles on the north side of the Town. THE BLOOD FARMS. The lines between Chelmsford, Concord and Billerica, and the farms of John and Robert Blood, were the cause of considerable controversy, which was settled in favor of Billerica. In 1694 a committee was appointed to run the lines between Concord and Chelmsford, Billerica, Wameset and the Blood Farms. Some vacant land was found which the committee claimed the right to grant. The writer saw some time since in the keeping of Mr. George H. Robbins of Carlisle, four old deeds dated 1666 and 1667, and bearing the signatures of Daniel Gookin and Thomas Danforth, which had to do with the Blood Farms. They are written on parchment, deer-skin or bear-skin, and one of them showed the round hole made by the bullet which killed the animal. One also has a patch sewed on with a rawhide thong to cover a hole or tear in the skin. Hazen's "Billerica" contains some facts concerning these farms. The Blood family have been represented in the neighboring towns. Robert Blood married Elizabeth, daughter of Major Simon Willard and had twelve children. He died October 27, 1701. This item is found in the Town records: Chelmsford geniway [January] the 15, 1694 In considerasion of a proposishon made by Robard Bloode consarninge a parsile of land purchased of the indians, he the said Robbarde Blood prepoaseth to the town of Chelmsford that in case the aforenamed towne will join with him, the sed p 473 Robbarde, in petishon for a confermason of the same and they doe asume the aforesaid land then the abovesaid Robarde ingageth to the town to intreste them in one thousand acres upon condishon the above said towne paye to the above said Robbart Blood five pound in silver and beare parte of the charge, and further the above said Robarte ingageth [engageth] to give to Mr Thomas Clarke of Chelmsford one hundred acres of land." 1. Carlisle, MA, 1700's / 1800's
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I wanted to let you know that I visited the "Green Cemetery" in Carlisle, MA, yesterday, to look for some GREEN gravestones from the 1700's. While there, I noticed there were many old gravestones with the WILKINS name on them ! Last week I borrowed the "History of Carlisle" from the Library and it does not have a Genealogy section. But, the Index mentions at least 30 WILKINS names ! I also have the "History of Billerica, MA," and I know there was an extended WILKINS family there in the early 1700's, but they seem to have moved either to Marblehead, MA, or to Maine ! However, I just checked the first few pages of the Carlisle book, and some of the first people to hold Town Offices were Timothy WILKINS and Isaac WILKINS, and those were 2 of the names from Billerica. They had originally lived on "the BLOOD Farm" in Billerica, and I read that, when Carlisle finally annexed off of Concord, MA, in 1754, "the BLOOD Farm" part of West Billerica was allowed to join Carlisle. Children of Dr. William WILKINS seem to have moved out of the area, but maybe children of Isaac WILKINS stayed in Carlisle for a while ! This is just an FYI for you ! Betty (near Lowell, MA) FYI: My WILKINS ancestor did not have a connection to the Billerica / Chelmsford area. He is one of my "brick wall extraordinaires." Samuel WILKINS was born ~1775 in "Maine" and remained in Maine - I am descended from him through 2 children. (My "hypothesis" is that he was the last child of a couple from Middleton, MA, who had "probably" moved to "Maine" -- William and Sarah (BANCROFT) WILKINS. FYI: While at the cemetery in Carlisle, I unexpectedly found a gravestone for a Rothesay KIDDER and his wife ! Even though born in VT, Rothesay married a lady from Lowell, MA, and they lived in Lowell, probably from 1909 through the 1920's ! Cora ROBBINS' parents lived in Carlisle, so that is probably why they were buried there !
