According to "A Guide to Massachusetts Cemteries" by David Allen Lambert there are 8 cemeteries in Melrose but 6 of them are sections of the Route 99 Jewish Cemetery. The other 2 are Wyoming(Sylvan St.) and Netherlands Cemetery(Linwood Ave.) There aren't any Catholic Cemeteries listed. Thanks John, I'm specifically looking for any cemeteries in Melrose or connected to the Catholic Church in Melrose. My Ancestors George Stockwell lived in Melrose for many years and I'm hoping to write the cemeteries trying to find him and his wife Kathleen. George Stockwell died in April 1966 according to the SSDI and I only know that Kathleen was alive at the time of the 1930 Census. They were married in a Catholic Church so they may be buried in a Catholic Cemetery. I just learned that the WYOMING CEMETERY is the city cemetery. It can be found at: http://www.cityofmelrose.org/departments/cemetery.htm Mailing Address: Wyoming Cemetery, 205 Sylvan St. Melrose, MA 02176 Phone Number: (781) 665 - 0405 FAX (781) 665 - 6380 I'd still like to know what Catholic Cemetery is associated with Saint Mary Of The Annunciation on Herbert St. I've left a request in at the Archdiocese web site but they specifically tell you that they may not answer. Catholic Cemeteries seem to be the best kept secret. Hi, Val (and Yvette): Has Spring come to Canada yet? The City of Melrose cemetery is Wyoming. Their web site is: http://www.cityofmelrose.org/departments/cemetery.htm Also, keep in mind that Melrose borders Malden which has many large cemeteries. Hello, I have posted more queries and received more responses, and it appears I need to go back to the MASTERS spelling (vs. the MARSTERS spelling). A NS researcher has found the death-record for William MASTERS in 1855, and he died in Boston at Age 55 and 2 mos. This puts his birthdate around March 1800. And, his parents are listed as William and Lydia MASTERS. I went back to the LDS site and found a record of a marriage for a William MASTERS and Lydia ROBINSON in 1796 in Boston. (The gravestone has the name spelled, MASTERS.) I then went to check the 1790 Census, and there seems to have been a large William MASTERS family in Boston. (And, the above William might have been William, Jr.) So, I'm wondering if the William MASTERS, b1800, had several uncles and aunts in Boston, and thus cousins ! And, a marriage record showed that William MASTERS married Mary C. DOW in Boston in Feb. 1828 (by Rev. SHARP). So, I'm wondering now if Mary was from a Boston or Cambridge family. Reminder that I am researching their daughter, Mary Ann MASTERS, b~1829, who married Thomas O. HUTCHINSON in Boston in 1851. Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. In case I haven't already mentioned it, there is a book on the MARSTERS family from Manchester, MA, which mentions "the Planters" who headed to Nova Scotia in the 1760's ! And, they are mentioned in a book about the DIMOCK family of Nova Scotia. And, I have found out that there is a Roger MARSTERS who is writing books about the Nova Scotia coastline (shipwrecks).
Hi, Is there a list of Cemeteries in Melrose, MA. I've tried googling but can't find them. Val Conway
Hi, If there is anyone that has access to the Melrose Newspaper I'd appreciate a lookup for the Obit of George Kilgore Stockwell. I found him on the SSDI but only have the death date as April 1966. I'm hoping the Melrose Newspaper isn't too large or the library has a database of deaths. I'd really appreciate the help. Val Conway
Hello, It dawned on me this morning that there were also DOW families in Nova Scotia, so I posted a query about the DOW and MARSTERS families in N.S. in the 1700's. Someone just responded with the following information: In 1958, the NEHGS published a book / document on "MARSTERS Family, Manchester, Mass." And, this researcher said that there were 3 brothers, Abraham, Jonathan, and Moses MARSTERS, who left Manchester and Salem, MA, and went to Falmouth, NS, in 1760. So, they were "planters" and not "loyalists." (They were sons of Abraham and Deborah (KNOWLTON) MARSTERS. She also said there is an 1899 book / document by J. D. MARSTERS on the "History of Kings County...." She said that this book might be digitized and available on the LDS site. I just received this e-mail a few minutes ago, so I haven't checked on-line for the books, yet ! Enjoy your day ! Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Hello, This is the web site for "Ye Olde Woburn" which I mentioned yesterday. http://www.yeoldewoburn.net/ It includes a 1638 map of Waterfield, MA, (former name of many for Winchester), and that map has my ancestor, George HUTCHINSON, down as the owner of a property. I just did a "site search" for the DOW surname, and found out that there was a Nathan or Nathaniel DOW mentioned as being a Revolutionary War soldier. (Also a Stephen DOW was mentioned as living there in the 1800's) I'm going to go check out this Nathan DOW from 1700's now ! Enjoy your Sunday ! Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. I'm finding out that several MARSTERS families left New England just after the Revolutionary War and went to Canada, settling in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. (Or, one, large extended MARSTERS family.) I'm posting queries to find out if William MARSTERS, b~1800, could have been born in Canada. I read that several of the families did return to MA, but I don't know when. Looking for information on the parents of Mary DOW who married William MARSTERS during the 1820's. The only child I know about so far is Mary MARSTERS, reportedly born in Boston in 1829.
Hi Dennis, I think it's been mentioned on the Lists before, but not recently. (And I haven't visited the site recently.) http://www.yeoldewoburn.net/ There is a 1638 map of Waterfield, MA, which shows my ancestor, George HUTCHINSON's land. But, I checked the surnames mentioned on the site, and, so far, don't see the DOW and MARSTERS names mentioned. Hello, I just remembered to check my books for the MASTERS and DOW names, and they are not mentioned in Arlington at all ! I checked the Winchester book I have and a Stephen DOW is mentioned as having been in Woburn in late 1800's. So, perhaps these families were in Woburn. However, when I opened the Winchester book, I discovered I had put one of my HUTCHINSON papers in there. This could be my sister's research, or she obtained it somewhere. But, the paragraph for the wife of Thomas O. HUTCHINSON says: "...... He married (2) Mary Anna MARSTERS, July 10, 1851, in Boston, MA. She was born March 21, 1829, in Boston, MA, and died in 1919 in Winchester, MA. Notes for Mary Anna Marsters: Great-granddaughter of a member of the Boston Tea Party !" I just went to a web site which lists the participants in the Boston Tea Party, and the MASTERS / MARSTERS name is not mentioned, so another surname is involved. http://www.bostonteapartyship.com/participants.asp (NOTE: The Museum would like to hear from descendants of these men !) I'll work on this project again next week ! Enjoy the rest of your weekend ! Betty (near Lowell, MA)
Hello, again, I went to the WorldConnect Project and did a search for William MASTERS, and was reminded that a researcher had found out that he married: Mary DOW. The researcher has no information on their parents, and is only showing their one child, Mary MASTERS, b~1830 MA. Mary MASTERS, b~1830, married Thomas Oliver HUTCHINSON in 1851, probably in Winchester, MA. I have checked the archives of the surname Message Boards, and no one seems to be researching these particular MASTERS and DOW families. Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA)
Can someone out there tell me what Bp stands for in the 1850 census as a birthplace? Husband was born in Ireland but the wife in Bp. Thanks
Hi Jerry, Thank you ! Now I know that's where the LOCKE's lived ! By the way, just a reminder that the first wife of Thomas O. HUTCHINSON was Harriett LOCKE. I had my (inexpensive) camera with me for use in the cemetery, so I took a picture of the plaque and the farmhouse (to finish up the film). And, a short walk down the street showed an old house in the back of the farmhouse. It was a ranch with large, old chimneys. I think my sister knows who owned the farm on the other side of Ridge St., which would have bordered on the HUTCHINSON Farm at 21 Ridge St. I'll have to e-mail her and have her remind me. Hello, When I drove to the Winchester cemetery yesterday, I also drove up by where the HUTCHINSON farms used to exist. While driving down Ridge St., I was reminded of the large plaque which is set in the front yard of a large, old farmhouse which is there. It is about Philemon WRIGHT. I just did a search and found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philemon_Wright And, at the bottom of the page are these links: http://www.wrightfamily.ca/ http://www.biographi.ca/EN/ShowBio.asp?BioId=37860 A member of this Westford Historical Society told me about the "WRIGHT family association." I have not yet found out whether the WRIGHT's in North Billerica are tied to early Woburn families. I remember that there were at least 2 large farms down Ridge St. from the HUTCHINSON Farms, and one was the LOCKE Farm. I don't remember whether it was the WRIGHT Farm - or in the early 1900's would have been known as the current owner's farm. This is just an FYI for whoever is interested. Betty (near Lowell, MA) Sorry 'bout the large print, again !
