Do you know of any newspapers from 1868-70 in the East Texas area that would be archived? I understand that Carthage does not have any archived papers for that time period. I am prone to believe that renegades or outlaws must have ambushed William's family -- I'm just not sure where are exactly when. I know William and Emaline were living in either Kaufman or Van Zandt County in 1865. It appears that at least 3 of their young sons ended up in Van Zandt County by the 1870 Census.
