Don't know how relevant this is, but my gggg-grandfather, Daniel Malone, had a son named William who left Columbiana County, OH at a young age (and prior to 1820). I have in my notes that he was reported to be in Muskingum, OH at one time, but no knowledge of his subsequent whereabouts. He was born in PA, some where between 1784 and 1800, and would almost certainly NOT have changed the spelling of his name when everyone else did. Hope this helps.
