1. [MALONE-L] repost why chelsea ma. from leitrim-longsford?
2. This has been bugging me since I started this quest. One hears about Southie and all that but the facts are the Irish went to Federal hill and Eastie and Chelsea and the Square out in front of South Station which is the Financial District today but why Chelsea. St. Rose's put out a book when they rebuilt and it says "It is not known precisely, who was the first Catholic to settle in Chelsea. It is know that there were a few here as early as 1833, just a mere "corporal's guard."The first Catholic settler of whom there is any definite information was Michael McLaughlin. He with Michael Farren landed in Halifax from Ireland in 1833 and after some months came to Boston, walking all the way. Mr. McLaughlin proceeded immediately to Chelsea. While Mr. Farren remained in Boston for about ten years and then moved to Chelsea. It is said that Hugh Gilmore, another Irish settler lived in No.Chelsea.Now known as Revere, as early as 1843." But why Chelsea? It defiantly sounds like this was the intended destination. Now since I started this I also realize that most of Chelsea Irish are from Leitrim, Sligo, Carvan, Longford and Meath, With Leitrim winning hands down. Then this week I thought with all these names I have done. Some where very Protestant but very Irish. Suppose in some area of Leitrim, a Protestant land owner and businessman [Scot Irish] was run out of Ireland by the Church Of England, as many where. Say this man started a business in Chelsea maybe a spice business and he needed good workers. The problem was he was in New England and not considered a Townie. A factor still in effect in small town New England. Now back in Ireland he was friendly with the Roman Catholics and he heard of the starting migration. Why wouldn't he seek out workers he could deal with? Lol and he usually got the better of. So that maybe that is why they came to Chelsea. It defiantly was a better place then Boston was for the Irish Jim who thanks Chelsea for welcoming those Immigrants i believe that town was somewhere in leitrim and it seems the whole town tranfered to chelsea as what i have learn shows maybe farren is farrell thei check out my next email-yes we are all related jim ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- all denning-dever-cogan in mass-some malone-carroll-mcguire-doherty-mcneil-piscopo-mazzola-heslin-martini-feddis-fa rley-dennen-dinan-fredricks- ____________________________________ "we go to school to learn the words of fools" bob dylan

3. Our Paternal Great-Great Grandfather was "Doc" Malone. Born in OHIO @1850, we have no record of his parents or other family members. He traveled to TRINIDAD, LAS ANIMAS COUNTY, COLORADO around 1867-1870. He married in Trinidad to (?) @1875, there is no record to date of his wife's name but it was possibly SOPHIA. Doc Malone's wife was of Spanish and possibly Ute Indian extraction. It is probable she was born in or near to Trinidad. There were three (3) known children, DAVID(?), SOPHIA, & STEVEN(?). Sophia was our Great-Grandmother. She was born on 22OCT1878 in Trinidad, Las Animas Co, Colorado. Sophia (aka SOPHIE) married to RICHARD FIELDS HOFF in Trinidad @1895. Richard F. Hoff was the (only known) son of FIELDS & ELIZABETH GOWEN HOFF, born @12APR1861 (from death certificate) in GAINESVILLE, COOKE COUNTY, TEXAS. Richard and Sophia Malone moved to the Oklahoma/Indian Territory shortly after their marriage and settled in McCLAIN COUNTY near the town of PURCELL. All of their children were born in McClain County. They were: (1)THEODORE b: @1896 Purcell, IT (Indian Territory); (2)MARY REBECCA b: 02SEP1897 Purcell IT, m: WALTER EVERETT RITTER in McClain County, d: 08MAR1966 in GUTHRIE, LOGAN CO. OK ; (3) ELMER "DOC" b: @1899 Purcell IT, m: MISS EVA (?); (4) GEORGE b: 1901, McClain Co IT, m: OPAL (?); (5) an infant daughter, born dead 1903, buried in the McClain County CEMETARY; (6) WALTER"JACK" b: JAN1907 McClain Co IT, m: LULU MAY; (7) DAVID "DAVE" b: JAN 1913, McClain Co State of Oklahoma, m: RITA(?). Dave is still living; (8) HENRY (HUFF Henry's last name was misspelled when he enlisted for WWII, he never corrected it) B: 21JUN1916 in COLBERT TOWNSHIP, McClain County OK, m: ANN (?) (*note Ann was murdered near Guthrie, OK in 1964, her murderer was never caught), Henry is still living; (9) HAZEL b: APR1918 Colbert Oklahoma. Hazel married two perhaps more times, only known husband was ALBERT ROWDEN. Hazel was last known to be living in Arizona or New Mexico. The last known contact from her was 1954/55. One of Sophia's brothers also moved into the Oklahoma territory at the same time as Richard and Sophia did, possibly moving with them. He eventually settled near TULSA, and his descendants are possibly still there, however all recent attempts to locate them have failed. Neither Dave nor Henry Hoff/Huff is well enough to help fill in the blanks. We would appreciate any assistance. Evelynne Davis Ritter Guthrie, OK

3. Fun fact on Memphis Malones. In the 1850's there was a law firm in Memphis called Malone and Malone. They did some work for Thomas Wood Malone [not related, but he probably picked them because of the name] of Point Pleasant, [W]Va regarding claims of his grandfather in the War of 1812. 1. [MALONE-L] Offer to hear "Opportunity"
2. All list members-- Walter Malone (1866-1915) was the son of Dr. F. J. and Mary Louise (Hardin) Malone. Walter was a lawyer and later Circuit Court Judge in Memphis. His first love, however, was poetry, and he published several books of same. His most recognized poem was "Opportunity," first published in 1905 in Munsey's Magazine. It achieved some regional fame, and was the subject of many sermons and school assignments. W. C. Handy, renowned blues musician, put the poem to music some years after Walter's death. I have obtained a copy from the archives of the Memphis Public Library, and transcribed it into Noteworthy Composer. If anyone would like to hear the Handy/Malone composition, let me know, and I will send a Noteworthy Player attachment (about 17.5 k) of the song. It is religious in nature, rather than "blues." In order to listen to it, you will need Noteworthy Player, free of charge at-- NoteWorthy Player . If that did not show up as a link, go to <http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/player/index.htm>. Enjoy.--David David Ellis, Cane Hill, Ark.
