I knew about the Carthage, Tx location, but because there wasn't supposed to have been any Indian incidents in that area in 1868-70, we kind of discounted it. However, now that I have census information showing Carroll first lived in Kaufman County and the settling by his kids in Van Zandt County, I'm wondering if perhaps SOMETHING didn't happen around Carthage, TX. According to my dad, Thomas (Carroll's son) told my grandmother something about there being an attack in and around Carthage when they were moving (we always assumed from TN to TX but it might have been when they were moving from Kaufman County) and everyone was killed but Tom's brothers. I've been able to narrow down the timeline to 68/70 from census records and it appears that both Carroll & Emaline died around the same time. I'm wondering if there are any old newspapers in the area that might have a story about it. O sweet mystery of life (and death)........ Any ideas of where I could be searching? Gwinnetta
Van Zandt county is very close to Ellis County, but I just have not made the connection with my Solomon Malone which was in Ellis county in the 1860 censes, hmmm, maybe brothers? Solomon's 2 older sons were married in Lamar County around 1880 (also 2 girls to Solomon and first wife) John H. Malone is our GGGrandfather. Mark A. Malone is his brother. John H lost his first wife in 1885 in child birth. He married again, but we have lost him. We know he had another child with 2nd wife. not sure of her name, some dispute on who he married. we have 2 names on 2nd wife, but assume it is last name Lamb. garys@arkansas.net ----- Original Message ----- From: <Gacrowell@aol.com> To: <MALONE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 10, 2002 10:42 AM Subject: [MALONE-L] Malones in Van Zandt County, Texas > My ggrandfather, Thomas Jefferson Malone (s/o William Carroll & Emaline > Malone, s/o William & Rachell Malone) was orphaned when he was probably about > 2 and adopted by a Clark family in Van, Texas. My ggrandfather, Thomas Jefferson Malone (s/o William Carroll & Emaline Malone, s/o William & Rachell Malone) was orphaned when he was probably about 2 and adopted by a Clark family in Van, Texas. He took back the Malone name we believe when he was an adult. I believe I found two of his younger brothers living with other families in the 1870 Census, although I can't find a mention of Thomas in that census. Buck (James Buchanan) 13 farm hand in home of John Daniels 28 farmer KY, Ait 24 F KY, Canton Pct 2; and Carol Malone 7 in home of Mary A. Wills 60 TN, Fenis C Willis 23 Farmer TN, Ann Smith 14, Canton Pct I found a J.A. Clark family in the 1880 Van Zandt Texas Census: J.A. Clark 50 SC; C.R. (wife) 48 TN, Thomas Clark 13 TX, Lonzo B Clark, 5 TX, D.E.D. Clark 3 TX, Addie Clark 1 TX. Family members remember hearing that adoptive family visited Thomas and one's name was Jay Clark. I'm wondering if C.R. Clark from TN could possibly be a Malone relative who married J.A. Clark, and if this is my Thomas, that is how he ended up in their family. Does anyone have information of other Malones that were in Van Zandt, Kaufman or Smith Counties in Texas during this time period (1870 -)? Also, Randolph Malone's book list three other siblings of Thomas Jefferson Malone that were born in TX that I had never heard of: Nancy E Malone B 1860 TN/TN (W. Carroll was found on the 1860 Census in TX) Yancy Malone (B 1961 TX) Carrol Malone b 1863 TX These are new additions to the information I have on William Carrol Malone's children. How do we know that they are actually his children? Gwinnetta Malone Crowell

Angie, My name is Judy and I have a John Thomas Malone who is my great grandfather. My dad says he was born in Missouri, but I do not have proof yet. Although, he died in 1934 in Coffeyville, Kansas. His dad's name was William L. Malone and his mom was Saria Black and they were from Missouri. John Thomas was married to someone before my great grandmother and had several children. One of his children are still alive and I am planning a visit to him soon. I do not know if this helps but I will keep you posted. Hi Jim Malone, we have Malone's in Lamar Co, Ellis Co, TX by way of LA We are back to 1850 with "Solomon" Malone (not sure if that is his birth given name). May I asked which Malone's you have for TX? We have not located Solomon's birth place (around 1825?) if census are correct. Would be happy to see if we have any matches. Looking for info on JOHN S MELLOWN, AND YANCY MELLOWN THAT BOUGHT LAND IN MISSISSIPPI. trying to find out how they are connected to gg grandfather ALEXANDER SMITH MELLOWN (MALONE) KIM
Malone see also MELLOWN at genforum http://genforum.genealogy.com/mellown/ Looking for additional info on my gg-grandfather, John MALONE (name is spelled MELLOWN in mariage records). The following is basically all I know of him. 1) found on 1870 census - Polk Co., TX 2) born ca. 1840, possibly in TX 3) married Charlotte Elizabeth GAY, 25 Dec 1867, Nacogdoches Co., TX Their children: William Calvin MALONE ('Cal') b. Apr 1865, Elbert Eli MALONE ('Eb') b. 28 Sep 1867, and Solomon MALONE b. Mar 1870. Charlotte Elizabeth marries again in 1876 (to James OWEN/OWENS, and again in 1886 to John CARTER). New information indicates that the couple may have split-up. Solomon was unknown to the desecendants of William and Elbert, so he either died young or went with John if there was a seperation. Descendants of William heard that William and Elbert were seperated for a time as children. Descendants of Elbert heard that John had returned on horseback, swooped Elbert up and carried him off. Elbert said that was the last he ever saw of his mother. So, what happened to John MALONE? Did he remarry and have another family? Also, who were his parents? Thanks for any information.
