"Participants will learn to recognize various photographic positive and negative formats and will study the unique preservation problems associated with each format type". The conservator will help you identify your old photos if you bring a few. 2. Sandy Moffett
    3. hi- I found a little bit of information on BENJAMIN BATES in The Hampshire History, 300 yr anniversary edition. Listed under the Chesterfield section:(on why some left Chesterfield) Some went west because indemnification land was granted to them by the government. One of these was Captain Benjamin Bates whos whaling vessel had been commandeered by Congress during the Revolution. Twenty years after the end of the war, he received a grant of land in the Western Reserve and although he was then eighty-four, he made his way out with his family (1808), a two month's journey, traveling in a convoy of some 100 wagons. Only other mention of Bates: In February of 1950, following adjournment of town meeting, a citizen' meeting was held to consider medical problems. Ath the meeting Mrs. harry (Florence) Bates, a registered nurse who had long served the town, asked for bolunteers to serve with her on a committee to investigate ways and means of securing adequate medical service. Hope some of this helps. 1. [MAHAMPSH-L] (MAHAMPSH-L) Is there a Franklin Co. List?
    2. Hello, My ancestor Benjamin Bates of Chesterfield (son of James, nephew of the Benj. Bates who was a councilman) married Hannah Kelley of Ashfield (dau. of Abner) in 1794. I found this in the Ashfield Vital Records book, but I can find no official documentation of the births of their five children, only what is in the Bates Family Newsletters of the 1920s. The latter gave the exact names and dates, so must have gotten them from somewhere. Where? The first three children, James, Phineas, and Emily Litchfield Bates, were born before 1800, probably in the Chesterfield-Ashfield area. Where? The family moved westward after that, although it appears that young James 's marriage and birth of children took place in Chesterfield (History of Chesterfield). I am looking for the birthplace and some record of Emily, especially. Is there a Rootsweb list for Franklin County? Thank you very much, Jane .

    3. Just received this info from my Uncle. If someone has any connections to this info, it may finally bring down our brick wall: "The Lorraine, Jefferson County census for 1855: Martha Terwilliger/Wood (husband Joshua Wood) age 67 was living with John Farmer, his wife Paulina (both age 40, and John F. age 18 and "Errelta" age 7, female) The father was born in Mass., and John F. and Errelta were born in Oswego. Martha and Paulina were born in Chenango County. Surely this is a young sister of Lonson Wood. She was about 4 years younger than Lonson." We are looking to prove Lonson (Alonson) is the son of Joshua and Martha Terwiliger/Wood. Thanks in advance Tim Wood

    3. North Adams is in Berkshire County........... You will need to be familiar with the changes in the counties and their bounderies changes if you do research in New England. For western Massachusetts....... 1.all of western Mass. was part of Middlesex County until 1662 2.all of western Mass. area was changed to Hampshire County in July 1662 3.Franklin County established from Hampshire County in June 1811 4.Hampden County established from Hampshire County in 1812 5.Berkshire County established from Hampshire County in April 1761 However, Hampshire County STILL exists..what it is today is much smaller than in 1662. Wiggins, Landlord" A scan can be viewed at http://home.flash.net/~birchwd/PCs/index.html. First offer of $10 will be accepted. I'll pay shipping. James Birkholz Dallas, TX

    1. [MAHAMPSH-L] RE: Ware research
    2. Marla: I was at Ware's town hall about 8-10 years ago, looking for records dating back to the 1860s. The clerks let me look through the birth, death and marriage indexes, and when I found a possible relation they would bring me the appropriate register to look through. It was a little time-consuming because I could get only one register at a time. The clerks seemed interested in helping me, even though they had other things to do. Some of the writing was faded or not very well-written, but better than microfilm I had seen. I don't know if the records go back to the 1700s. Good luck Regards, John Neville
