    2. I didn't mind the discussion BUT - the problem is that people weren't reading all the posts before posting their replies. How many times in one day do I need to read that Six Flags used to be Riverside Park.

    3. Why not pick one day of the week for "off topic" discussion and let everyone go at it and then call it quits at the end of the day. Then you wouldn't have to put a stop to it if they get carried away and beat the topic to death and members wouldn't get upset with you for putting a stop to the discussions. Claire

    2. The history of these parks has helped my genealogical search. I want to say thanks. If you do not live there and are researching people in the area the more you know of times and places it really truly helps.. SusiCP Family Historian It's the Indian in me.....:>)

It closed some years ago. Whalem Park-Fitchburg closed several years ago. Riverside Park turned into SIX FLAGS. Grrrrrr...I don't have my list with me now but there were numerous others large enough to be called 'amusement park'. Forest Lake-Palmer. There was one in Northhampton,Leominster,Pittsfield,etc.etc. Mostly the trolley companies created such to increase ridership. Many of these places have been gone maybe 100 years ago so !!! Most probably dies post 1930's...some wimpered into the 50's.... As to Forest Park.Springfield. Ever recall it ever having ANY amusement? A merry-go-round??? I'd swear as a kid I remember one but can't find any evidence I'm not imagining things. Records show a 'Suburban Park' in Springfield. hmmm???? Down in Hartford,Ct. there was a large park later called Luna Park. The whole area is gone.Even the city park there is gone. Worcester had a big one...White City.... Also Pinehurst Park which is kind of an elusive mystery. Appreciate getting response sent via email. The Forest Park question?

I remember the stock car races and demolition races there.. They also had rodeos.

    3. Yes, it was Agawam, and the Exposition is still running. It's called the Big E now, see http://www.thebige.com/, and it runs for about 17 days now. -----Original Message----- From: MAHAMPDE-L-request@rootsweb.com [mailto:MAHAMPDE-L-request@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Sande Sent: Thursday, September 09, 2004 11:30 AM To: MAHAMPDE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MAHAMPDEN] - old amusemnent parks - There was also Riverside Park. Maybe someone else will let me know if it was in Agawam for sure, it's been allot of years. But my favorite was the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield held once a year in September for about ten days. Each New England state has it's own building etc, just like a huge fair. It went from trashy and dangerous to a beautiful, family-oriented beach, and I'm delighted! Nantasket Beach is gone, too. I remember going out there last about 25(+/-) years ago. Six Flags used to be Riverside Park.
