They may have books in the vault that date further back, but the person researching has to go there in person and ask to see the book. Otherwise, I assume, writing to the MA State Archives in Boston, MA. would be the best thing for earlier vital records. The Conn. Valley Historical Museum at the Quadrangle, State St. Springfield, MA. does not have vital records. Only books, census, MA. birth & death records on microfilm (certain years) type sources for research. There may be books on specific families, etc. Wouldn't hurt to contact them to ask what they do have on your family. Hope this helps. Roberta Cyr

I did not realize that there was another library other than the The Berkshire Athenaeum. The National Archives is in another building and I didn't think they were so far apart, but then I am a country person who considers distance as a hop, skip, and a jump. I don't know if the other library has the extensive genealogy section, but my money is on the The Berkshire Athenaeum Library or at least I think it is called a library. -----Original Message----- From: Pat Lavato [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, April 15, 2002 9:18 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MAHAMPDE] Re: MAHAMPDE-D Digest V02 #86 It was the same when I was there a couple years ago. They are all sorted by last name, first name and tell you which book and page to ask for and this is where you can find the parents of individuals etc. The indexes also tell you which town so help you narrow down your search. I cannot say enough about what a wonderful resource this place really is for genealogical research. The staff is very helpful too.

The Holyoke Library maintains a Holyoke History room, typically open Thursday - Saturday during usual library hours, although in the summer this changes to Wednesday - Friday. Cemetery recordswould depend upon which cemetery, of course. Forestdale in Holyoke has an on-site office open during the weekdays. With Catholic cemeteries you would need to go through the Diocese or individual church for details. An early French Catholc church in Holyoke, Precious Blood, had its cemetery in South Hadley, MA. You can see some information about this from the Hampden County site: Http://www.rootsweb.com/~hampde.
