First Generation 1. Zebina Curtis NEWCOMB was born on 25 Aug 1791 in Bernardston, Hampshire, Massachusetts. He died on 13 Jun 1868 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts. Son of Hezekiah N., and descended from one of the original families of the town. Inherited a part, and received some by marriage with the only child of teh late Judge Goodale, who founded the Goodale Academy. He is a trader - close calculator, prudent, and hs made money in his business. In his charities he is extremely cautions, yeat judicious. Hall & Co., 1902, p. 445 Mr. Newcomb was one of the representative men of the place, holding the office of town treasurer in 1823 and 1824, town clerk 1824, selectman and assessor the same year. In 1836 he was appointed justice of the peace, which office he ever afterward held. For 44 years he was an officer in the Congregational church, and for nearly fifty years was engaged in mercantile buisness in town, his store, sawmill, house and large tract of land being located on or near Fall River. They were burned out in the great Chicago fire in 1871, and he with his brother, R. F., went to Quincy, Ill, and bought a paper mill, and started it up under the firm name of Newcomb Brothers, still retaining his interest in the Beloit mills. M.V.M., he enlisted as sergeant in Co. A, his service being with Banks' expedition. For some montsh he served on the brigade staff, having charge of the ordinace supplies, and later of the entire medical stores. Upon leaving the service, he was for some time associated with his father under the firm name of Z.C. Newcomb & Son. In 1866 he removed to Beloit, Wis., where he engaged in the paper making buiness with a wholesale house in Chicago. The company was burned out in the great Chicage fire of 1871, and soon after, he with his brother bought a paper mill at Quincy, Ill., and started it up under the firm name of Newcomb Brothers. In 1889 his mill was absorded by the American Straw Board Company, with Mr. Newcomb as its President. Mr. Newcomb, as well as his brother, merit the great success which has attended their business career. Mr. Newcomb resides in Qunicy, but much of his time is spent at their salesroom in Chicago.
