Lewis was Deputy Sheriff of Franklin County, Mass. for many years. During WWI he and a partner, as undercover agents, were instrumental in preventing enemy agents from blowing up the Hoosac Tunnel which was vital to troop movements from the west to the east coast. In 1922 Lewis moved his family to Berkeley, Cal., where he joined the police force. Later he was Assist. Supt. of the physical campus at University of California, Berkeley.
