All of their twelve known children were born in the old house which still stands there on the bank of Pelham Brook. They went to Wisconsin in 1856 and were first for some time at Menasha, then at Mazomanie. They settled in Black Earth before 1866 and remained there. He was a member for many years of Stanford, Logan & Co., a grain and mercantile business from which he retired in 1902. He was a verteran of the Civil War (4th Wisconsin Regiment) and a member of the G.A.R. A newspaper account published in the 1930's about the old home in Zoar recoutns that John fell in the well there whne a child and nearly drowned. His niece, Jennie Ballou of Rowe, wrote in 1936, "I never to my knowledge saw Uncle John but have been told he was a small man and rather inferior in build to his brothers."
