They went to Wisconsin in 1856 and were first for some time at Menasha, then at Mazomanie. They settled in Black Earth before 1866 and remained there. He was a member for many years of Stanford, Logan & Co., a grain and mercantile business from which he retired in 1902. He was a verteran of the Civil War (4th Wisconsin Regiment) and a member of the G.A.R. A newspaper account published in the 1930's about the old home in Zoar recoutns that John fell in the well there whne a child and nearly drowned. His niece, Jennie Ballou of Rowe, wrote in 1936, "I never to my knowledge saw Uncle John but have been told he was a small man and rather inferior in build to his brothers."
