He traveled extensively in New York, Vermont and Pennsylvania, usually in the fall after his crops were harvested, for he had inherited his father's house and farm. One diary relates how he took a trip to Smithfield, Pa., stopping at various places along the way. One of these was an Indian settement where the meat served at meals was so tough that the squaws had to tenderize it by pre-chewing. Rev.
