This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: CARY Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4EB.2ACE/1057.1 Message Board Post: Hi Martha, Rowe and Charlemont are towns in Franklin County. ALL Franklin County Land (i.e. Deed) and Probate records are housed in the Franklin County Courthouse on Main Street in Greenfield. Franklin County records begin with 1812. Any records of this nature (i.e. deed and probate) prior to 1812 are housed in the Hampshire County Hall of Records on King Street in Northampton. This is because Franklin County was part of Hampshire County prior to 1812. As you might have gathered, deed and probate records are housed at the county level. Specific vital records for a particular town are housed in that town, usually in the town clerk's ofice. Please refer to a corrollary posting of mine (Franklin-Hampshire County) on August 25, 2006 that provides more details about this chronology. Good luck.
Hi I had relations in West Leyden MA, and had to go to Springfield, to find that they had the records for Barnardston , Deeds. My Baker family, Benjamin and Elijah purchased land there in 1784 and 1788, both from R.I. Most of the earliest records are still in Springfield.
