Putnam was captured; in this action he took an Indian's gun and scalp, which he brought home; was a sergt. under Capt. Salah Barnard in the conquest of Canada; soon after he married at Northampton, Patty, probably Parsons; lived a while at Northampton, then removed to Sudbury and kept tavern; being in Cambridge June 16, 1775, he joined a party marching to Bunkder Hill and was in the battle; in 1777, he went to Maine and later to Nova Scotia; for about 40 years, his kindred had lost sight of him and supposed him dead, when at the age of about 80 he landed in Boston and walked to Deerfield; he fell off an embankment in Shelburne and was found dead, July 26, 1824. his wife died in Northampton bed. his return. iv. Ruggles' regiment; for an account of his position and experience during the Rev. war, see ante, p. 741; on the return of peace Maj. Catlin took a prominent part in the affairs of the town; was often in town office, and selectman three years; he did not accumulate great possissions, and it was said "Major Catlin was too much of a gentleman to be a rich man;" Reuben Bardwell writes of him in 1837; "He was a man of urbanity, and strict integrity, but of very strong feelings; could never pass a scene of distress on the other side, or suffer guilt to pass with impunity;" being reproached by some Tory friends for naming them at some judicial investigation, the major burst out indignantly, "You didn't expect I was going to lie di you?" he lived on No. 22, where he kept tavern; he was a lover and breeder of fine horses, and me! t a fatal injury in being crushed against the side of a stall by a high mettled barb. vi.
