Mr. Kelley was a strong anti-slavery man, one of the first in his town to advocate those principles, although at the time of the fugitive slave law, his ideas were unpopular in Vermont. He was the promoter of a paper to exempt Vermont from the law. With the assistance of many influential citizens, the paper was carried before teh Legislature, and became a law in the State. Mr. Kelly, althoug over seventy years old, has never used tobacco or liquor in any form, and has the life and vigor of a man many years younger. Alpha J. KELLY and Mary ADAMS were married.1 Mary ADAMS died on 19 Apr 1854.2 Alpha J. KELLY and Mary ADAMS had the following children: +2 i. Charles A. KELLY, born in May 1848, Randolph, Orange, Vermont3; married Margaret (Maggie) THOMPSON4; died on 11 Dec 1890, Hawley, Franklin, Massachusetts3. Alpha J. KELLY and Lucinda N. CHADWICK were married on 5 Jul 1860.5 Lucinda N. Since 1888, she has been an invalid, and it is owing to this fact the Mr. Kelly sold his farm and retired from active business, devoting his time to the care of his wife. Second Generation 2. Charles A. He purchased the farm of Thomas O'Hara in Hawley in 1880 and resided there. Charles A.
