Author: CliffordCobb Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.counties.franklin/2154.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: To the best of my knowledge, "The Taunton Cobbs" settled in the Taunton area sometime after 1651, and before 1657(Eldest daughter of John Cobb, Bridget, died Nov. 22, 1651, in Swanage,Dorset,England, and John was granted land and mentioned in the records of Taunton, 1657). The original "Taunton Cobbs" consisted of two brothers, Augustine 1632-1714, Edward 1636-1675, and their uncle John 1609-1691. They may have immigrated together or separately, John is the first one mentioned in any records I have found. Often " the Taunton Cobbs" are referred to as "The Blacksmith Cobbs" as John was granted land in Taunton to start an Iron Forge, and a very high percentage of their descendants were involved in the metal working business. My records, gleaned from Taunton and Bristol Co. V.R.'s as well as researchers work before me, yield the following information on the descendants of John, Augustine and Edward, Which would have been in the time frame you have mentioned (1680-1730). 1st. Jo! hn Cobb b.aft1609, Swanage,Dorset,England, died Nov.1691,Taunton, mar.1st. Margery Gover, May2,1629, Swanage. They had two daughters; Bridget,b.1633, Swnage, d.niv,22,1651,Swqanage, and Ursala b.1638, Swanage, d.June29,1642, Swanage. Margery d.1669-1676, Taunton, Bristol, Ma. John then mar. Jane Godfrey Woodward b. abt. 1651 Wayemoth,Plymoth, Ma., d.Mar.17,1735/36, Taunton, on June 13,1676, in Taunton. John had four more known children with Jane; 1.John b.Mar31,1678,Taunton, d.April 11,1746,Dedham,Ma.: 2.Morgan b. abt.1680,Taunton, d.Apr 28, 1769,Taunton; 3. Samuel b. abt 1682,Tauntond.1726,Taunton; 2nd Augustine b.Jan.6,1632/33,Corfe Castele,Dorset,England, d.1714,Taunton, mar. Bethia Harvey b.1648,Adderbury,England, d.bef.1748,Taunton, in Taunton in 1670. They had 7 known children: 1.Elizabeth b.Feb.10,1669/70,Taunton, 2.William b.abt.1670,Taunton, d.bef.1714,Taunton, 3.Morgan, b.Dec.29,1673,Taunton, d.Sep.30,1755,Taunton, 4.Samuel b.Nov.9,1675,Taunton, d.1732,,Taunton, 5! .Bethia b.Apr.5,1678,Taunton, d.bef.1778,Barrington,Providence,R.I., 6 .Mercy b.Aug.12,1680,Taunton, d.1780, 7. Abigail b.May 28,1684,Taunton, d.July 5,1772,Taunton: 3rd. Edward Cobb b.Nov.19,1636,Corfe Castle, d.Oct.4,1675,Taunton, mar.Mary Haskins(Hoskins) b.1640, Plymoth Colony, d.abt1725,Taunton, on Nov.28,1660, in Taunton. They had three known children; 1. Edward b.1661,Taunton, d.aft.1733,Taunton, 2.Elizabeth b.1669,Taunton, 3. John b.April 8,1672, Taunton, d.Jan.2,1731/32, Taunton. The first given name of Thomas Cobb that I have in my records, is that of Augustine's grandson (son of Morgan) b.1705,Taunton, d.May7,1779,Taunton. This also doesn't fit your time frame. It is possible that there may be an unkown child of these three "Taunton Cobbs" named Thomas, but I am personally unaware of that. There is another Cobb family, "The Barnstable Cobbs", Descendants of Henry Cobb, who by DNA Results are in no way related to the "Taunton or Blacksmith Cobbs" which also lived in Ma., but more so in the Plymoth Colony during your time frame. I beli! eve they immigrated around 1623 , so they might very well have had a child named Thomas b.1680,d.1730. But I haven't found any V.R.'s from Taunton, Swansea, Norton, or Bristol Co., that would them in the area during the time of your Thomas . A possible next step in your search might be to post an inquiry on the Cobbs or Cobb DNA-L Message boards at Rootsweb. Goodluck, Cliff Cobb, descendant of Augustine Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
