    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Jillaine_Smith Surnames: Smith, Hitchcock Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.counties.franklin/2158.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: rolandgig, Thanks for the comments on my draft manuscript. And I don't mind proofreading comments at all. I've spent so many hours staring at and updating this document that I can certainly benefit from fresh sets of eyes reviewing it. And the error you pointed out is also one that a spell-check wouldn't find. So thanks. I haven't studied the SMITH line extensively, but I did take a close enough look in my attempt to confirm the link between Jerusha Smith and the later Warwick pastor, Preserved Smith. And Joel F. who also reads this board was very helpful in finding the confirming link for me. If I understand it right (and this is from The History of Hadley which ancestry.com has included in their digitized collection of histories), there were two contemporary emigrating SMITHs who ended up in Hadley-- Lieut. Samuel and Rev. Henry. The History of Hadley doesn't link them, but the fact that they both use some of the same names for their children -- including CHILEAB -- makes me wonder if Samuel and Henry were related in some way. I'll leave that to others. Their lines did intertwine at least once: Samuel's descendant Mary Smith married Henry's descendant Preserved Smith. Mary and Preserved had at least two children, named: Samuel and Chileab. Jerusha was the daughter of Samuel; the Warwick reverend Preserved Smith was descended of Chileab, creating the link between Jerusha and Preserved. And, of course, this establishes a link to your own Chileab Smith who married Hitchcock. I believe that these old SMITH lines are well documented elsewhere. I'm fairly certain that there is a genealogy of Rev. Henry Smith-- he stirred up trouble in Wethersfield, CT and was supposedly instrumental in an entire group from there leaving town and going to Hadley, MA. I haven't seen a genealogy of Samuel SMITH other than in the History of Hadley, but I bet if you poke around Google, Google Books and Ancestry.com's digitized histories and genealogies, you'll find something. You might also ask over at the SMITH board/list. -- Jillaine Smith (no relation; my "Smith" is of German extraction) Washington DC Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
