He kept an account book with (asid from Timothy Page's later one) is the best source of our direct information about domestic life in the 1750's and 1760's. He was also the District Treasurer. He probably lived here the rest of his life, perhaps on Third Div. #19. I've not taken the time to merge this information in my database Hope this helps. Regards, Paul Allred
Paul, most of this information can be substantiated through person accounts first by William King Sr. (IV) a first cousin to several William King's grandsons of John and Elizabeth (Goldthwaite) King of Salem and final resting place in Sutton but only shortly thereof. Our family records indicate that John Sr. of Salem came shortly to Sutton where his sons Samuel, William, Jonathan, and son in law Benjamin Marsh were platted to have over 3,000 acres. John signed papers in Salem in 1714 and is listed as deceased in his sister in law's will upon her death December 18, 1718. Also listed as deceased was his son Jonathan Sr. husband of Sarah Cooke. It is thought that he had a share of the lands at Sutton but probably never came there where his name was registered in 1717. William Jr. of William Sr. and Hannah Cooke was one of three children who were at Sutton but it is now known if they stayed long. William King as noted came "perhaps" 1755 is the King I am interested in. The perhaps is given from a letter written by Hannah King Upton wife of Timothy Upton to the town fathers in support of her sisters birthplace at New Salem in 1759. She wrote that her father moved "his family" to New Salem at a time when her son was of a certain age and it is from this letter that we have assumed it was 1755. They lived with Abigail King Foster and Amos Foster in either a home they owned or actually with the Foster Family in New Salem. Abigail and William are siblings of Jonathan King (husband of Alice spelled Verry (but also seen spelled Berry in records at DAR) of Sutton. This Jonathan was not known as Jr. as his father died when he was of an early age and he was the oldest minor child of 7 children. In June 1719 the court of Salem awarded custody of the Jonathan and Sarah (Cooke) children to William and Hannah (Cooke) King and Benjamin Cooke. This we have proof that Jonathan Sr.'s wife was Sarah Cooke listed as a minor in 1692 and never again seen as Sarah Cooke but listed as Sarah King. She lived with her son Jonathan Jr. and Alice in Sutton until she died. Jonathan has a son in Sutton among others named John a Veteran of the Revolution and with whom our Amos served in the Revolution. A letter among other research was published in Michigan about 1972 detailing the story given of William King and his family in New Salem and Shutesbury right up until her death and the remarriage of Timothy when he moved out of New Salem. I misspelled the surname of Stephen King's wife Sarah Demon using the Damon surname. Records of Orange indicate that Stephen and Sarah married at Orange on 18 November 1784 were both of New Salem. The only Stephen that we can account for in this time frame is the son of William King Sr. (IV) at Shutesbury in 1765. We then note that Stephen's mother had died after 1765 and before the census of 1790 when William Sr. is once again living with Amos Foster and his third wife. Abigail (king) Foster died with no children. We also believe that Amos Foster was a second cousin to the Cooke family by the Birdsal sisters. I might have mentioned in other notes that Rufus King placed Mary Andrew daughter of Captain Nathaniel and Mary (Higginson) Andrew of Salem as the second wife of our William. this Mary Andrew married William's cousin William son of Samuel and Widow Elizabeth Barton his second wife where he was among the youngest born 1729. Mary died in 1759 and William then married a Crowninshield in 1761. Unfortunately for Rufus he just seemed to relish putting wives to the William King's any old place that was convenient. He was known for this and is notorious having been warned not to take such liberties. As I mentioned John and Elizabeth (Goldthwaite) King Sr. had 9 children not the 8 given in the Goldthwaite book. They actually raised 8 with Thomas dying young. Each one of the King sons John, William, Jonathan, Samuel and the sisters had a son named William. Therefore you can see how one might get confused as they also married cousins and women with surnames the same as their married aunts all the way out to Long Island. Where Mary married a Scudder, Kathryn married a Swayzy, Hannah married a Browne, and both Mehitibel and Deliverance married the Tuthill brothers. So we now search for the William King who they say came perhaps in 1755. He left there after 1761 and returned after 1765 and before 1790. This is all that we know of William that can be documented with certainty. I am hoping that if the records of Orange are intact it will actually name the mother of those 4 King kids born between 1756 and 1765. Thanks for the info on New Salem. This certainly adds to my research. Daniel (fifth great grandson of William King Sr. (IV) I use (IV) to indicate that there were at that time 4 full generations of Kinge's who carried the name William as a Jr. or a Sr. but not necessarily in a direct line. > An History of New Salem, Mass.
