Lucy Webster STEWART (Nathan-1) was born on 24 Jul 1830 in Montague, Franklin, Massachusetts. She died on 19 Jul 1924 in Wichita, Sedgwick, Kansas. Lucas Independent, July 23, 1924 - Lucas, Russell County, Kansas. Mrs. Lucy Benjamin Lucy Stewart was born July 24, 1830, in the state of Massachusetts and departed this life July 19, 1924, at the home of her son J. J. Benjamin, Wichita, Kansas, aged 93 years, 11 months and 23 days. At the age of 19 she was married to Samuel Benjamin; to this union was born four children, three having proceeded her in death: Julia, who died in infancy; Fred, who died in 1916, and Herbert who died in April 1923 and one surviving daughter, Mrs. Nellie Wallace of this place. In 1856 Samuel Benjamin died, and after two years of widowhood she married to William Benjamin, brother of Samuel, on June 6, 1858. To this union was born four children, one daughter and three sons, three of whom survive, Hollis the oldest having died December 27, 1893; there remaining Mrs. Hattie Wing, of Boulder, Colorado, J.J. Benjamin of Wichita, Kansas; and E. S. Benjamin, of Eldorado Kansas. Since the death of her husband, Wm Benjamin, she has made her home among the children, spending the greater part of the time in Lucas in the house of Mrs. Wing and Mrs. Wallace. Besides the sons and daughter living she leaves one brother and two sisters: Wm Stewart, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, aged 92 years, Mrs. Emma Dunbar, age 92 years; Mrs Emma Dunbar of Peterboro, New Hampshire, aged 84 years; and Mrs. Hattie Gardener, of St. Paul, Minnesota, aged 80 years; twenty two grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren. We wish to tank the many of friends and neighbors for the sympathy extended and assistance rendered during the death of our mother, Mrs. Lucy Benjamin; also to express our appreciation of the many beautiful flowers and the music by the quartette. He died on 16 Feb 1905 in Lucas, Russell, Kansas. Lucas Independent, Lucas, Kansas - February 24, 1905 Death of William Benjamin. Wm. Benjamin had been allying about two years but was only bed-fast a few days before his death. He was born July 8th 1836, in the state of Vermont; died Feb 16, 1905, at the home of L. R. Wing near Lucas. He was married to Mrs. Lucy Benjamin, widow of Samuel Benjamin in the state of Vermont, Jan. 6, 1858. To them were born one daughter and three sons. All are living except Hollis who died Dec. 27, 1893. Those remaining are Mrs. Hattie Wing of this city, Jerome J. Benjamin, of Corbin, Sumner County, Kansas and Emory S. of South Haven. After living for a number of years in Vermont and Mass. had moved to Wisconsin in 1863 for the benefit of his health which he regained to a certain extent. After living there and in Minn. for 17 year he with his family emigrated to Kansas in the spring of 1879 and located near what was then known as Bluestem Post Office. He lived in that locality up to the time Lucas was started and then moved there and opened up the first Hotel in that town. After running it for a few years, he moved to South Haven, Kansas in the year of 1892 where he has since resided. Last October he came up here to spend the winter with his daughter Mrs. Hattie Wing, where he died. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon, Rev. Wilks presiding form the text: "If a man die shall he live again?" The remains were interned to the Odd Fellow Cemetery. He was known and respected by everybody. The Twenty Seventh Regiment was organized at Springfield September 20, 1861, under Colonel Horace C. Lee. It reached Annapolis Md. the 5th of November 1861. It saw battle at Roanoke Island February 7. It was in the battle of Newbern, N.C. March 11, 1862; Gum Swamp May 20, 1863; Arrowfield Church (Va.) May 9, 1864; and on may 15, Drury's Bluff, where a quarter of its number were captured and taken to Libby Prison. One hundred men of the Twenty Seventh died in southern prisons. after Drury's Bluff the regiment was reorganized under Major William Walker. June 3 it was in the battle of Cold Harbor, where Major Walker was killed. The command devolved upon Captain Moore. June 18 the regiment was at Petersburg, one of the hottest battles of the war. In that vicinity is was continually under fire until August 27. On September 27, 1864, 179 men were mustered out at Springfield. March 8, 1865 the remainder of the regiment was captured at Goldsboro.
