SCOTT, Erastus. Erastus Scott was born in 1775 in Massachusetts, married there, and had a number of children there. He purchased land from the Holland Company in what is now Hanover, NY in 1811 with Isaac Smith (listed from Whately, Massachusetts in a county history). Erastus lived in Hanover from 1811 on. He had the following children, as far as I can piece things together from early censuses. Paline/Pauline b. 1798, three daughters and a son between 1798 and 1805, Chandler b. 1805, Chester b. 1806, Erastus b. 1807 all born in Massachusetts. Another daughter was born between 1810 and 1820 who may have been born in NY. I have found one Erastus Scott born 1775 in Whately but I need to find the births of his children in Massachusetts to give me more evidence that the Erastus Scott in Whately is "MY" Erastus Scott. With all due respect to the excitement of the hunt, if you would like to know what to do to get us to help with questions such as this, you should also mention what sources you have already checked. For example, there's the excellent John Scott genealogy by Mary Lovering Holman that covers this area. There are histories of Whately and neighboring towns. There are federal censuses, there are vital records in a variety of formats, electronic and/or online in some cases. Thinking about migration patterns is a good strategy.
