    1. Re: [MAFRANKL] Erastus Scott Family
    2. Glenda Breslin
    3. You are absolutely correct. I get concerned about putting too much information into messages and I can certainly see that I left out too much in this one. I found an Erastus Scott in several Scott genealogies on-line that seem to be based on: Allen, Orrin Peer's, Descendants of William Scott, of Hatfield, Mass., 1668-1906, and of John Scott of Springfield, Mass., 1659-1906. I'll try to find a copy of the Mary Lovering Holman John Scott genealogy you mentioned. I have checked all the federal censuses from 1890 to 1860. I can find an E. Scott in Charlemont in 1810. There are two men of the age of Consent (a brother of Erastus according to Allen's Scott genealogy book) in Charlemont in 1800 in his household. One could have been Erastus, or James, Consent's twin brother or someone else. I have looked at the town records for Chartlemont and find the marriage and all the children of Consent Scott listed but none for Erastus. I have also searched the records for Deerfield, Sunderland and Hatfield in Franklin county without success. Erastus Scott and Isaac Smith (from Whately, Massachusetts) purchased property together from the Holland Land Company in Chautauqua County in 1811 and they seem to have been there after that. My next thought was to check all the towns along the rivers between Whately and Charlemont I haven't checked but I was thinking that some of you might know migration patterns in the area and have some suggestions. I will continue to search records of the area. 3. Thanks. I have found three brothers and their parents in a number of sources such as the Whately town records and a couple of books on the Scott family. The problem is that all of the sources end there. I'm pretty sure that the Erastus Snow in New York is the same Erastus Snow in Whately but I havent been able to find a way to prove it. It seems that if I could find him having his children in the area that would help a great deal. I have contacted four people who have Scott trees on line and none of them know what happened to Erastus. Thanks for your lookup. It's hard to know how much to say on message boards. Thanks again. 3. With all due respect to the excitement of the hunt, if you would like to know what to do to get us to help with questions such as this, you should also mention what sources you have already checked. For example, there's the excellent John Scott genealogy by Mary Lovering Holman that covers this area. There are histories of Whately and neighboring towns. There are federal censuses, there are vital records in a variety of formats, electronic and/or online in some cases. Thinking about migration patterns is a good strategy. But should we be thinking about that or should you? It depends on where you are and what you have access to. We don't know. Sermon for the month, addressed really to any who venture in. 3. I find the births of some of my family in Whately in 1775. One brother moved to Charlemont, where it appears my family was in the 1810 census. I would like to find them in the 1800 census. Is there a natural immigration progression from Whately toCharlemont? Are there some towns that he would have been more likely to stay at between Whately and Charlemont? Is there some trade or commercial connection between Whately and Charlemont? Looking at the lay of the land it would appear that one would travel along the Connecticut River, then along the Deerfield River. I can't tell from my map if there is another river between the two. It seems logical that I would need to check the towns from one place to the other. Any thoughts or experience trancing family in the area? Thanks, Glenda Breslin

    3. SCOTT, Erastus. Erastus Scott was born in 1775 in Massachusetts, married there, and had a number of children there. He purchased land from the Holland Company in what is now Hanover, NY in 1811 with Isaac Smith (listed from Whately, Massachusetts in a county history). Erastus lived in Hanover from 1811 on. He had the following children, as far as I can piece things together from early censuses. Paline/Pauline b. 1798, three daughters and a son between 1798 and 1805, Chandler b. 1805, Chester b. 1806, Erastus b. 1807 all born in Massachusetts. Another daughter was born between 1810 and 1820 who may have been born in NY. I have found one Erastus Scott born 1775 in Whately but I need to find the births of his children in Massachusetts to give me more evidence that the Erastus Scott in Whately is "MY" Erastus Scott. Seeking more information on this family. Happy to exchange other information I have. Happy Hunting, Glenda

    3. Please remember also that Google books has over 50 of the Mass Vital records books online at Google Books and more are being added all the time. ANd you can search all the ones they have for a single surname. They also have some other goodies ! Betsy

    3. Does the name Seth occur in the Knowlton families of Rowe? One of the early settler "brick walls" in nearby Halifax, Vermont is Seth Knowlton, who appeared as head of a family on the 1771 census, signed one petition and disappeared without a trace.

I, like other desc.of these people have been struggling for years to get them straightened out and now that I no longer live where I have access to libraries to do my own research, I really get frustrated with having to try to accomplish something via the internet. Hopefully what you have sent will help me put some people where they belong - too many of the same names (like Timothys - 3 of which are my lines, the others are not but I am never sure who is who.) Two things I have been stumped on more than the rest (?) is information on my Timothy born 1720 to Timothy born 1687, and who had a son Timothy born 1745 (all mine) with no wife, no death dates, nada. And still trying to find out who Harry Butler is who was a grandson to Timothy (1745-20 June 1815 ) - both died on the same day- in Rowe. I am also now trying! to figure out a way to check on some deeds/indentures/mortgages that might also give me some info - I have printed out the messages you posted and will not see what I can do with them. Thanks again for taking the time to do this.

I am aware of the marriage of that marriage of Charles Winchester to Mary Wilkins, but I believe it was a different Charles. The Charles married to Mary Wilkins was the son of Stephen and Beulah Trowbridge and wrote his will in about 1788. My Charles was the son of Isaac and Mary Shed and died about 1827. Thank you so much
