    1. [MAFRANKL] SCOTT SMITH connection in Whately, Hamp., MA
    2. Glenda Breslin
    3. I wrote this this morning for Joel and decided that it needed to be posted to the general list. I appreciate the help that you are giving. I hope to help others one of these days. I first found Erastus and Polly SCOTT in Chautauqua County, New York. They said they were born in Massachusetts. I found Erastus SCOTT born in Whately, although many books written on the family say he was born in Sunderland. I think the family may have lived there at some time. Erastus was born to James SCOTT and Sarah DWIGHT (haven't proved the Dwight but that's the only name given in books I've looked at) in 1775. His twin brothers, Consider SCOTT and James SCOTT, were born the next year in 1776 and James SCOTT, the father, died in 1777. I have no idea what happened to Sarah SCOTT. She's not listed in the 1790 census. I don't know if she died or if she re-married. Erastus SCOTT bought land 7 August 1811, in what was later Hanover, Chautauqua County, New York. He was one of the first settlers and is mentioned in most of the Chautauqua County histories. Relevant to Franklin County, Massachusetts, Erastus SCOTT sold part of his 500 acres to Isaac SMITH, who must have been a childhood friend. Isaac was born in Whately also. He moved to a more easternly New York County first, it appears and then to Hanover. "He was in the war of 1812 at Buffalo, contracted fever in the service and died." Erastus was his admistrator to his estate. According to Tree Talks Vol 37, No2, June 1997 from the letter of Administration, Vol 0 1/2, office of the Surrogate, Chautauqua County Courthouse, Mayville, NY, Isaac SMITH died intestate. Erastus SCOTT appointed Administrator 11 Apr. 1814. P. 12. Several of their children married one another. Isaac SMITH's father was Benjamin SMITH and his mother was Elizabeth according to the IGI at familysearch.org . That's also where I found a list of Isaac SMITH and Roxa[nne] MORTON's children: Henry SMITH b. 21 Oct 1793, Benjamin SMITH b. 2 Aug 1794, Matilda SMITH, b. 20 Nov 1796 and Roxa[nne] SMITH b. 25 Oct 1801were all born at Whately, Massachusetts. This smae source lists Rodney Barnes SMITH was born in 1798 at Smith Mills, Chatagua [sic] New York. I'm pretty sure that where he died not was born. Just for the record they had The next three were born at Gasham, Ontario, New York: Tirza SMITH about 1804, Hiram SMITH abt. 1805, Artley or Attley SMITH abt 1807, and Ether SMITH 18 May 1811 at Portalnd, New York. I found the family in the Whately reords who were born there but not proved the others yet. I also asked Joel to search the Corbin Collection for me, as that has been suggested to me in the past. Thanks again. Happy Hunting, Glenda

    3. The set of CDs with Mass vital recoreds for Franklin County has the Orange VRs. Do note, that the early records are problematical. Orange was a district until 1810, and therefore was not required to keep these records, the original towns were. You can find Orange VR before 1810, in Athol, Warwick, and Royalston. However, the Town Clerk had families record their births, however the birthplace was not noted. If some of the children were born elsewhere, all were recorded as from Orange. The records are a challenge. The best thing is to find the origin of the family, and check those town records as well. 1. Re: [MAFRANKL] Asahel Wells
    2. Margie, Do you have any records of Asahel's siblings? I am struck on Mercy Wells, born in Massachusetts July 16, 1768, according to her gravestone in Spafford, Onondaga Co., NY. She married Jeremiah Olmsted, and they lived in Hope, NY, and removed to Spafford in the 1830's. 1. [MAFRANKL] Asahel Wells
    2. Marjorie Bridges
    3. My troublesome ggg grandfather was Asahel Wells, b. 1772, who I believe was born in Franklin Co. (Deerfield?), moved to Guilford, Windham Co., VT with his parents around 1784 (land record), married Catharine Weld there on 13 Nov 1791 (town record), abandoned her in 1805 to run away with Nancy Holden, was picked up by constable in Deerfield in October 1805 (VT archives of constable asking to be reimbursed by VT legislature). The family Bible he kept never mentions the first marriage, gives the second marriage date of 19 Apr 1805 but I can't find the marriage in Windham Co. or Franklin Co. (maybe they just married in their minds). Nor can I find a divorce. Catharine, b. 1759, lived to 1840 and it states on her tombstone in Athens, Windham Co., that she was wife of Asahel Wells. That sounds like she never gave him a divorce. Asahel was in Athens, VT in 1800 census with two women age 26-45, two boys under 10, and two girls under 10. There are no records of children born to Asahel and Catharine in Athens or Guilford during 1790s. This must be a sister with her 4 children living with them. I cannot locate Asahel and Nancy in 1810 census unless they are down in Canaan, Litchfield, CT with one son and two daughters (which matches information about children's births stated in Bible). They are near Rochester, NY in 1820 census, listed in the city directory there in 1827, and then Asahel dies in January 1829. No record of his death other than the Bible. His widow lived in Southport, Tioga (now Chemung), NY in 1830 census. Nancy died in 1855 somewhere, according to the Bible, but I can't locate her in censuses past 1830. There are no probate records for Asahel or Asahel's parents, Thomas and Olive Newton Wells, that I can discover, but I did find the probates for his two fathers-in-law in Windham County and both mentioned Asahel. Does anyone have any other ideas about other sources I should look for regarding early info on Asahel and Nancy? I don't know for sure where their first child was born in 1806, but the others were born in NY per censuses and other sources. I have looked in many Holden, Wells, and Weld genealogies but all just end with the births of Nancy, Asahel, or Catharine, nothing about their marriages. I forgot to mention that I believe Asahel was born in Deerfield area because his parents were married there in 1761. I have no idea who Olive Newton's parents were, but Thomas' were Jonathan and Abigail (Dickinson) Wells. Thanks for any help, Margie

    1. Re: [MAFRANKL] An History of New Salem, Mass.
    2. Paul, most of this information can be substantiated through person accounts first by William King Sr. (IV) a first cousin to several William King's grandsons of John and Elizabeth (Goldthwaite) King of Salem and final resting place in Sutton but only shortly thereof. Our family records indicate that John Sr. of Salem came shortly to Sutton where his sons Samuel, William, Jonathan, and son in law Benjamin Marsh were platted to have over 3,000 acres. John signed papers in Salem in 1714 and is listed as deceased in his sister in law's will upon her death December 18, 1718. Also listed as deceased was his son Jonathan Sr. husband of Sarah Cooke. It is thought that he had a share of the lands at Sutton but probably never came there where his name was registered in 1717. William Jr. of William Sr. and Hannah Cooke was one of three children who were at Sutton but it is now known if they stayed long. William King as noted came "perhaps" 1755 is the King I am interested in. The perhaps is given from a letter written by Hannah King Upton wife of Timothy Upton to the town fathers in support of her sisters birthplace at New Salem in 1759. She wrote that her father moved "his family" to New Salem at a time when her son was of a certain age and it is from this letter that we have assumed it was 1755. They lived with Abigail King Foster and Amos Foster in either a home they owned or actually with the Foster Family in New Salem. Abigail and William are siblings of Jonathan King (husband of Alice spelled Verry (but also seen spelled Berry in records at DAR) of Sutton. This Jonathan was not known as Jr. as his father died when he was of an early age and he was the oldest minor child of 7 children. In June 1719 the court of Salem awarded custody of the Jonathan and Sarah (Cooke) children to William and Hannah (Cooke) King and Benjamin Cooke. This we have proof that Jonathan Sr.'s wife was Sarah Cooke listed as a minor in 1692 and never again seen as Sarah Cooke but listed as Sarah King. She lived with her son Jonathan Jr. and Alice in Sutton until she died. Jonathan has a son in Sutton among others named John a Veteran of the Revolution and with whom our Amos served in the Revolution. A letter among other research was published in Michigan about 1972 detailing the story given of William King and his family in New Salem and Shutesbury right up until her death and the remarriage of Timothy when he moved out of New Salem. I misspelled the surname of Stephen King's wife Sarah Demon using the Damon surname. Records of Orange indicate that Stephen and Sarah married at Orange on 18 November 1784 were both of New Salem. The only Stephen that we can account for in this time frame is the son of William King Sr. (IV) at Shutesbury in 1765. We then note that Stephen's mother had died after 1765 and before the census of 1790 when William Sr. is once again living with Amos Foster and his third wife. Abigail (king) Foster died with no children. We also believe that Amos Foster was a second cousin to the Cooke family by the Birdsal sisters. I might have mentioned in other notes that Rufus King placed Mary Andrew daughter of Captain Nathaniel and Mary (Higginson) Andrew of Salem as the second wife of our William. this Mary Andrew married William's cousin William son of Samuel and Widow Elizabeth Barton his second wife where he was among the youngest born 1729. Mary died in 1759 and William then married a Crowninshield in 1761. Unfortunately for Rufus he just seemed to relish putting wives to the William King's any old place that was convenient. He was known for this and is notorious having been warned not to take such liberties. As I mentioned John and Elizabeth (Goldthwaite) King Sr. had 9 children not the 8 given in the Goldthwaite book. They actually raised 8 with Thomas dying young. Each one of the King sons John, William, Jonathan, Samuel and the sisters had a son named William. Therefore you can see how one might get confused as they also married cousins and women with surnames the same as their married aunts all the way out to Long Island. Where Mary married a Scudder, Kathryn married a Swayzy, Hannah married a Browne, and both Mehitibel and Deliverance married the Tuthill brothers. So we now search for the William King who they say came perhaps in 1755. He left there after 1761 and returned after 1765 and before 1790. This is all that we know of William that can be documented with certainty. I am hoping that if the records of Orange are intact it will actually name the mother of those 4 King kids born between 1756 and 1765. Thanks for the info on New Salem. This certainly adds to my research. Daniel (fifth great grandson of William King Sr. (IV) I use (IV) to indicate that there were at that time 4 full generations of Kinge's who carried the name William as a Jr. or a Sr. but not necessarily in a direct line. > An History of New Salem, Mass. 1. [MAFRANKL] Stephen King & Sarah Demon marriage at Orange
    2. Familysearch.org the LDS church has the marriage of Stephen King to Sarah Demon both of New Salem, Hampshire, Mass as 18 November 1784. I believe that it is possible by brick wall might come a tumbling down if I can prove the Stephen is the son of William King Sr. (IV) and his second wife. I don't know for certain that he was married twice just that as in the past I believe that William's first wife would have been to old to have had 4 more children between 1756 and 1765. I believe from various records that Stephen was born in Shutesbury. The family had lived with Amos Foster in New Salem until at least 1761 but had returned to New Salem from Shutesbury by the 1790 census. I believe that Stephen is the youngest full brother to my Amos Nahum King born in 1756 and died at New Lebanon Springs, Columbia, NY in June 1839 a Rev Veteran. Daniel

    1. [MAFRANKL] Stephen King marriage in Mass
    2. Dear list, my cousin and I have been searching high and low mostly up against the proverbial brick wall for this family. We know for certain by letters written and published that William King moved his family to New Salem in 1755. We believe because of the wording of a letter by his oldest daughter that her father William King had married a second time. We do not have proof of this but clues lead us to believe that when he and his wife had 4 more children that his first wife would have been to old to be the mother of at least the youngest one or two. We know that William King Sr. (IV) married Hannah Mitchel(l)of Haverhill, Essex in 1740. Hannah a daughter was born in 1741 and William Jr. (V) was born in 1743. We do not know where the family was living between 1740 and 1755. William King moved into a house owned by his brother in law Amos Nahum Foster all that we basically know is that he did not own property in New Salem, Hampshire County (Franklin was formed from this county much later). In 1756 Amos a son was born to them the name of the mother has never been mentioned but we do know for certain that she was not Mary Andrew who married his cousin William King and died in 1759. We believe that he named this son to honor his brother in law. In 1759 a daughter Sarah was born named for William's mother followed by Jonathan in 1761 named to honor his father. The family moved to Shutesbury after he was born and in 1765 a son Stephen King was born there. After 1765 and before 1790 the mother died. I have found records for all the children to date and just today (Saturday 4 November 2006 we found the following. It is my desire to persue this person in the hope that he does name his mother in any of the vital records of New Salem or Shutesbury. Can anyone help? Early Massachusetts Marriages Prior to 1800 Hampshire,County Orange page 170 Stephen King & Sarah Demon, both of New Salem, Nov. 18, 1784

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4EB.2ACE/1062.2 Message Board Post: Hi, at this early date, parents were not listed in the vital records. I have looked through newspapers for early Ashfield marriages, and there was no mention of their marriage that I saw. However, by census data it appears that Joseph and Emily James lived in West Troy, New York all their lives, so I suggest looking for death records in West Troy if you have not done so already. Census data say that Joseph James was born abour 1811 in Rhode Island and Emily was born about 1812 in MA. Joseph was alive in 1860, but not in the census of 1870 and Emily was alive in 1880, but not in the 1900 census. Hope this helps. Carol
