I am searching for ANY info on the family of Solomon SYKES/SIKES 1798 MA-1871 NY & wife Harriet N. AUSTIN 1802 MA-after 1870 NY. Reportedly they married in Colrain, MA in 1824 and I found them on the 1830 census at "Coleraine", Franklin Co., MA and 1840 at "Montague", Franklin Co., MA. If someone has access to Church or County records of birth, death and/or marriages - I would appreciate a lookup for any SYKES/SIKES data. Likewise if there is a cemetery in the Colrain area. Grateful for any help or advice, Dorothy Nashville, TN

Hello Missy: According to Sheldon's A History of the Town of Deerfield, Vol. 2, pp 188-192: Lois Hawks married Dennis Stebbins, 18 Dec. 1800, (assume Deerfield). She was the daughter of Paul Hawks, b. 1737, settled on his father's farm at Wapping (a section of Deerfield); was soldier in French Wars; d. Oct 15, 1814. He married Lois WAIT of Hatfield; she died Oct. 11, 1810. Paul was the son of Eliezar. Eliezer, b. 1693 - Sheldon notes: "In record of this family we find Eleazar, Eliezar and Eleazer."; settled on the Hawks place at Wapping; in 1743 he bought of John Chickley 500 acres of land at Charlemont (Mass.) and lived there abt. 1762 for a few years; returned (to Deerfield) and died May 14, 1774. He m. Nov. 24, 1714 Abigail Wells; she died May 7, 1768, age 71. Eliezer was the son of Eliezer. Eliezer b. 1655, deacon; came with the first permanent settlers; was constantly in town office; was with Capt. Turner at Peskeompskut and came out without a scratch; d. Mar. 27, 1727. He m. April 30, 1689, Judith, dau. (of) Wm. Smead, the first marriage recorded on town register; she d. Jan. 27, 1718/9, age 54. Eliezer was the son of John. John Hawks, "NOT, as some claim, s(on) of Adam of Lynn"; was of Windsor (CT) 1640, where the name is found as HAKE; removed to Hadley 1659, as one of her first settlers; was buried there June 30, 1662; his widow Elizabeth m. bef. 1669 Robert Hinsdale, who was killed with Lathrop (at Bloody Brook in Deerfield), she m. (3) Thos. Dibble of Windsor; she d. Sept. 29, 1685. Do you have or need the Dennis STEBBINS ancestry? Regards, Shari Strahan Deerfield, Mass. Am looking for info on Lois Hawkes who married Dennis Stebbins. Lois was born 1-3-1781 in Deerfield and died 9-19-1862 in Deerfield. I have no info on her ancestors, but am more than willing to share what I have on her descendants. Thanks, Missy :)
to pwalred--thanks for the info--I'll have to see if I was missing any of those children, and get back to you. Looks like you're a descendant of Mary? Both of our ancestors avoided the 'plague' of 1805 that wiped out most of the family. But that put them in the Heath history! Sara Campbell of Millers Falls

Dear [email protected], I am the great-great-grandson of Abigail Eels COLEMAN 1818-1892, wife of Moses Whitney MERRILL 1817-1859 in Shelburne Falls. I am living in the house at 22 Mechanic Street built by Moses in Shelburne Falls in 1852. See www.bearhaven.com. Abigail's parents were Oliver COLEMAN abt.1778-1863 and Eunice THOMPSON b.abt.1786, of Buckland. All four of the above are buried in Arms Cemetery, Shelburne Falls. I have a nice photo of Oliver COLEMAN. From the History of Buckland: Oliver's parents were probably Gershom COLEMAN b.abt.1751 in Coventry CT, d.1822 in Buckland; and Abigail UNKNOWN, b.abt.1751, d.1826 in Buckland. Gershom's parents may have been Gershom COLEMAN and Mary ALLIS of Coventry CT. Could these be related to your Franklin County Colmans? My Franklin County Colmans are fairly well documented, but it seems unusual I haven't found a connection to other families in the area with the Colman surname. Are there other Colman researchers out there? I see Benjamin was part of the large number of child deaths in Shelburne in 1777. Here's some of what I know: Job Colman was baptized on 11 October 1741 in Ipswich, MA. He was the 5th child of James and Rachel (Andrews) Colman, who soon moved west to settle in Lunenburg. Job Colman married Elizabeth Martin on 20 February 1766 in Lunenburg. The first child of Job and Elizabeth, Mary, was born at or near Lunenburg in October of that year. Their first son, Samuel, was baptized in Ashburnham on 10 September 1769, followed by Elizabeth on 11 August 1770, and John born 21 June 1772. On December 25, 1772 Job sold 80 acres of “mowing pasturing & plow land” with buildings to his brother Aaron. It was time to move west. In 1773 Job Colman bought land in Shelburne near the Deerfield River from Daniel Belden, where the family lived until 1796. Seven more children were born in Shelburne: Rachel in 1774; Benjamin in 1776 (died in 1777); Rhoda in 1887; Benjamin in 1789; Joseph Emerson in 1783; Zenus in 1785; Zur in 1789. Neighbors included the family of Parker Dole, previously of Littleton. Samuel Colman married Abigail “Nabby” Dole in 1792 in Shelburne and moved west into New York State. We are descended of this line. During the Revolutionary War, Private Job Colman marched with Captain Hugh McClelllen’s Minute Men of Colrain on April 20, 1775. Records show he served 15 ½ days. Again under Captain John Wells Company in the Northern Department, he served from 22 September to 28 October 1777. Job Colman again moved his family about 1796, relocating to Heath. The property was identified in Calver’s history on the west side of Royer Road, south of the road to Dell (“to the mills”) now abandoned. There are reports that he operated a tavern at another location, but I haven’t found other evidence. Pearle Tanner, in her sesquicentennial history of Heath, refers to the area as Coleman village. In 1805 the family was stricken by typhus, along with several neighbors, and the parents and three children died. First Rhoda, aged 26, died on July 8. She was followed by Zenus, aged 19, on August 2; Joseph, aged 21, on August 5; Job on September 2; and Mary (aged 61) on October 25. Although the graves are not marked, they are buried in Shelburne at the Hill cemetery where Benjamin was buried in 1777. The youngest child, Zur, survived. He petitioned the court to have Captain Benjamin White named his guardian. Probate records in Hampshire County contain a precise description of the family’s belongings. Also listed in the probate file are a considerable number of debts paid and received. This could indicate a business relationship, possibly the tavern referred to above. The land was divided among the surviving children. The land was appraised by a committee appointed by the probate judge Joseph Lyman, including Roger Leavett and James White of Heath, and Robert McCollen of Colrain. The value was determined to be $225 for the 12 acres to the east of Royer Road (“the county road leading from Charlemont to Rowe”); and $808 for 72 acres with buildings on the west side. In addition, ½ pew in the meeting house was valued at $13 and a right in the horse shed at said meeting house was worth $4. With the exception of about 6 acres conveyed by Mary (Colman) Town to William Maxwell at the southwest corner of the intersecting roads in 1806, the remaining heirs did not convey the land for at least six more years. It was sold to the abuttors Luke White, Hugh Maxwell, and Phineas Smith. Land records give clues to the remaining heirs: Mary had married Thomas Town, who appears to have land east of Heath center on Calver’s map, west of Swamp Road between Colrain Brook Road and Colrain Stage Road. Children listed in the Heath Vital Records include: Arad born 29 August 1790; Ruth born 2 November 1798; Lucinda born 23 February 1800; Rachel born 15 February 1802. Mary died in Heath on 24 April 1826 at the age of 59. Thomas died 11 December 1818 aged 60. Samuel had married Abigail Dole of Shelburne in 1794 and soon after moved west into the Glimmerglass region of New York State, to Stewart’s Patent (Otsego), where they raised 8 children. Elizabeth Reed? John had died before the property transferred, according to Calver. Rachel married Elias Rawson of Springfield NY on 27 January 1795. Connection to Samuel? In 1811 when they sold their portion of the estate, their residence is listed as Augusta, Oneida County, NY. Benjamin was listed as a resident of Stockbridge, Windsor County, VT in 1815 when he conveyed his land. Zur was listed as a resident of Phelps, Ontario County, NY in 1817 when his land was conveyed to Hugh Maxwell. He may have traveled west with Hugh Maxwell, who surveyed Phelps and Gorham’s Purchase in 1788-9 in central New York State around Canandaigua Lake. Deed descriptions include references to the house and outbuildings.

Hi, I am attempting to track down a marriage for my ancestor, Joseph LAWRENCE (born 1737 in Rochester, died after 1780- in Vermont). Joseph and his wife Susannah ___ had four children, in Athol, Worcester County, from 1766-1772. I am looking for Susannah's family, and have drawn a blank in Worcester County. Joseph's father owned land in Roxbury Canada, around the time that Joseph reached marrying age, so I suspect Susannah may have been from the Orange-Warwick area, which is now, of course, part of Franklin County, but was part of Hampshire County in the 1760s. I have also determined that Joseph LAWRENCE owned land in the western part of Athol, possibly bordering on the Warwick Orange area. Does anyone on the list have access to vital records of Warwick, who could check for a marriage of Joseph LAWRENCE and Susannah around 1765? My apologies to all of you that have seen my queries before but there is always hope that somebody new has joined our list and may have knowledge of my ancestor. Johnathon(Jonathan) HARRINGTON was born 25 July 1804 in Barre, Ma. to Samuel HARRINGTON. I had no clue who Johnathon's parents were until I sent for his d.c. in October. His d.c. told me his place of birth was Barre, Ma. and father was Samuel but the line that says: Mother's Maiden Name_______________ only had an "S" on it. I immediately wrote to Barre Library, town clerk, town historian , and all told me that there was no birth record or any record of a Johnathon(Jonathan) or Samuel HARRINGTON in the town of Barre's records. I thought perhaps there was a mistake and wrote to Barre, Vt. and Barre, N.Y. but it was of no avail. I can find my first traces of my grgrgrgrandfather Johnathan HARRINGTON in 1831 as military records say his son Dexter V. HARRINGTON was born in Battenville, Washington County, N.Y. in 1831. In 1833 Johnathon was listed as being issued a Certificate of Denomination for a church in Lee, Ma.,Berkshire County. Johnathon HARRINGTON married Louisa RENIFF of Buckland, Ma. 8 Jan. 1827. They had 10 children. I can follow them through censuses of Berkshire County Ma. from 1830's - 1860. Oddly enough 2 of their children were born in Vt. and 1 child was born in Canada. So while their main residence was Berkshire County, Ma. they did go to Vt. from time to time and once to Canada. I always presume that they left Ma. to either find work or perhaps stay with relatives. Louisa RENIFF HARRINGTON died Lee, Ma. 29 Jan 1860. Johnathon's eldest daughter Frances moved to Brandon, Vt. when she married Benona WHEELER. After Louisa's death Johnathon and his son George W. HARRINGTON moved to nearby Goshen, Vt. where he died on 25 Oct. 1867. I have explored every avenue trying to find a b.c. for either Johnathon or Samuel HARRINGTON, or a marriage license for either of them. I have been stuck on Samuel HARRINGTON for nearly a yr. and I need to find info on his wife, place of birth and death, and if Sam had any other children, and if he had siblings and who his parents were. I would love to receive any info on this family so I can move beyond Johnathon's birth date of 1804. Thank you for any information you may be able to provide me. I am interested in a number of families who had a dynasty of physicians in the early 19th century in Colraine. The Deanes led by Christopher; Ross led by Sam and Sam jr.; Horace Smith. Also interested in any information on Sylvester Axtell, born in Worthington and practiced for short time in Buckland. Thank you
